ok, so i was just wondering if there are any regulations on the sticks public school teachers can use for hitting the kids?
the teachers at my school use wooden ones (a lot of bamboo), but today one of my co-teachers found and started testing a metal rod...
are there any rules when it comes to this? |

I heard something about the MOE making some regulation about only using a 50cm stick on the backside, but in our school district it seems like no one thinks anything of teachers hitting students with anything on any part of their body. Yesterday in the staff room a row of six students were getting hit on the head and hands with one of those big, curved backscratchers that looks like the top of a shephard's staff, and who knows what else after I left the room. Later I could hear the slap slap slap of a homeroom teacher whacking one of her students with her hand just outside the door. Just another day at the office.
Actually it's usually not that bad at my school. At Babo Technical High School down the road apparently the disciplinary teacher beats students 10-15 times across the shins with a big stick. |

I never had a discipline problem in class, because I carried this every day:
It's the psychological equivalent of a nuclear weapon. |

To a beating, sure, fight back. But to simple, common physical punishment? Not wise.
I saw a student in trouble who wasn't being hit, just scorned. He started talking badly about the teacher's mother in retaliation. He then put his fists up in fighting position. That turned into a beating, and not for the teacher.
The simple punishments don't hurt. I've asked the Korean teachers to hit me the same way, a bop on the head, a rap on the palm, etc. It's no worse than what the students do to each other during lunch time and between classes.
I don't hit kids. The most physical I get is making them stand in uncomfortable positions. |

the rule of thumb should be in effect
it's ok to hit students with a stick thinner than your thumb...like you could do to your wife back in the good old days |

A few days ago a teacher hit a student here with a recorder. That was amusing. |
