Get her busy. Give her exams to grade and a lot to copy. When she says it isn't 'her job', call the Korean boss right in front of her and get some back up. Once she is swamped, the job won't look so sweet.

Everything here is based on hierarchy, and you are laughable to her if she feels that can answer you that way.

Sounds like a problem in job description coupled with a really lame worker to begin with.

Yeah, gotta agree here. Always bad to lose your cool, especially in front of someone who is supposedly positioned beneath you. Order and ignore is the game plan. Sounds cheesy from our cultural perspective, and sometimes it's not easy to make yourself do, but that's what makes the wheels go round here.

Good post.

OP, don't put up with her nonsense. PRagic is bang on the money.

If her job is to assist...then that's what she should do.

One caveat though. She may be the boss's niece or something along those lines. Make sure that she's not there just to fill a space because the bossman owns someone a favour.

Get a copy of her job description from the boss, then point to it every time she says "It's not my job"

Until then, just ask her "What IS your job?" and get an answer.

Wow. 3rd post and some dolt has already jumped on the OP. Ignoring the idiots here, go for the shame and blame strategy and keep up with the passive-aggressive technique. Unless the 'assistant' is related to the owner/director of the school somehow, she'll eventually get tired and quit. In the case that she's 'connected', she'll probably complain and get 'promoted'!

Getting even mildly physically intimidating could be grounds for the OP to be dismissed.Who'd look the dolt then? Rolling Eyes

Just tell everyone around the office she's banging the work freak. You know, every workplace has one. The crazy/really ugly guy who couldn't get a girl if he had $1000 and was in Thailand.

Why don't you just ignore her and concentrate on doing your job?

Aren't there more important things to worry about?

I think because the point is that he(she) could probably concentrate their job better if the 'assistant' would do hers.

what i would probably do is tell her what i want done, copies for example, then ignore her when she says it's not her job and walk away. later when the class rolls around and if no copies appear, have no copies for that class. after class go up to your boss, say "i'm worried about <girl's name>, she seems very busy. i asked for some copies today and she wasn't able to get them to me, so my class had no copies. maybe we should hire a 2nd assistant?"

something along those lines. mostly likely, yr boss, at the prospect of possibly hiring a 2nd assistant and yr class having no supplies, will talk with her. it's important though to make sure it doesn't sound like you're blaming her -- just in case she is the boss' niece, daughter, mistress, etc.

First take her aside in private and lay down your grievances in a calm and tactful way. Don't be antagonistic, just be real.
if that doesn't work, raise it with the management. Call a meeting.
