Preemptive note for Anti-Mac people: you make a lot of good points, but I've already decided to buy a Mac. I already have a PC, and I need to use some software that is *only* available for the Mac.
People who know Macs well, can you help me?
I want speed and performance, as well as (hopefully) some longevity, but I don't do video work.
I don't play games.
I can go either desktop or laptop, with a slight preference for a good-size laptop. Very slight.
I often use multiple USB devices, with at least two connected at all times.
I would like to be able to do sound editing, and I have very high standards for audio quality.
I will almost certainly need to run Windows on it from time to time.
I don't need to buy right away, but probably in the next six months.
Money is not a limitation, but of course I don't want to spend more than is necessary; I don't want to pay for functionality I won't use.
Please help me! Also, if you can think of any important criteria I left out that might help determine which model suits my needs, please let me know--I'm normally not the most fastidious or thorough person, but I've done pretty badly with computers lately, and want to know that this time, if I get burned, it won't be for lack of knowledge. |

Buy a 24" iMac. Best Mac for the money. Lots of HD space in the base configuration, plenty of ports, and easy upgradability.
Just like with PCs, you get twice the computer for your money if you go desktop over laptop. |

If money is no object: 15" or 17" Macbook Pro
If you want value: Macbook
The iMac is a beautiful machine but assuming you live in Korea, I think you'll appreciate the versatility of owning a portable.
Macbook over the Macbook Pro because, with the exception of the graphics capabilities, the Macbook specs are pretty close to the Pro's, making it a better buy imo. With the money you save on a Macbook, max out the ram and stick in a 7200rpm hard drive (ie. Hitachi Travelstar) and you have a pretty decent desktop replacement. |

Other things to note about Macbook vs. Macbook Pro:
Macbook has no PCMCIA Card Slot - MBP Does
MBP has a Backlit Keyboard!
Overall, though, I agree with ublove. The MacBook is the better value when you line up the specs.

Is portability the only reason the Macbook is a better choice than the iMac? I have only a (very) slight preference for a laptop, as I mentioned. Anything else?
How about timetable? Pros/Cons of waiting vs. buying right away? |

As much as I love the new iMacs, personally, I'd hesitate to buy a desktop unit that's attached to the monitor. Three or four years down the road when I'm looking to replace the computer, I'd like to have the option of reusing the monitor. To me it makes more sense to buy a laptop and hook it up to one of those nice 24" Dell monitors.
As far as timetable, it looks like Apple just updated the Macbook line again today. Santa Rosa chipset and updated onboard graphics chip. Now that Leopard comes preinstalled, I suppose now (or whenever the updates arrive in Korea) would be as good a time as any. |

I saw 33,000 last nite. So you can basically get a 2.16 processor macbook and upgrade to two gig for around 1,200,000 in all brand new, albeit the hdd is only 120 but 120/160 who cares still too small just get an external 500g and you'd be set. |

| Macs are really good here for the shopping websites, banking, just about any of the IE optimized sites. Really good they are. |
