|
|
I'm going to study at Chung Ang University at the Seoul campus next year (anyone heard of it? Good area?).
I'll get free accommodation in the dormitories. Many of you work at universities--what is the general opinion on the dorms? Note, I could find no description of a kitchen on each floor, so I assume I won't be making my own food. |

I usually eat after midnight because of my ravenous appetite, but the free accommodation is still more appetizing.
I think the rooms will be with four beds, so I'll share with three Korean boys. I don't know what to think of that yet. All the Korean international students at my university are timid little people.
Would you guys ever live with three Korean boys? |

Dunno if I can afford that considering all the other expenses of this trip. Ugh |

Fire hazards, from what I've seen. My friend lived in student housing, and each night the doors were chained shut from the outside from 1:00 AM until 6:00 AM every night. |

For lack of funds it might be okay. I got sick twice in three months in the Yonsei International Dormitory. And zapped from the iron cord.
Roommate liked to cook chickens in a kettle in the room. It was yucky. But, good for the free price I got it for. |

Well, another problem would be smokers if you don't smoke. Some of my students who aren't smokers have told me that their roommates are too inconsiderate to smoke outside of the room.
But, I would think that they'll match you with some of the better students, maybe even English majors or guys from your class...that or you'll be housed with some of the other foreign students. In any case, I'd be surprised if you end up with guys who would be on academic probation back home. You'll be in grad school? More likely, you'll be sharing a room with other grad students. Don't worry.
Heck, why don't you call them up and ask? You might even be able to make requests (just be polite about it). |

Actually it looks more likely that I'll be at the Anseong campus because there are more dorms. Males share a room with one other person and the value of the free accommodation is $620 per month.
Anyone know the area called Anseong? Looks to be 80km from Seoul. I was hoping to go to John Frankl's BJJ training which is at Yonsei University and Apgujeong-dong. How long of a trip would this be? Maybe I could attend on weekends only.

80km in Korea is like a 27 hour drive. |

Okay, I'm not coming anymore.
I still want to experience more of Asia though, so I might do JET for one year after my BA. You guys make Korea sound too shitty. |

Anseong is under 2 hours from Seoul. Dorm is not so bad in Korea. Too bad you're not coming. Fun to play soccer with students. Caferteria food costs like 2 dollars and you can order cheap food to be delivered nearby. University kids drink a lot of soju together and have a great time.
You are missing out if you don't come.
PS I know 3 guys who teach at Chung Ang. pm me if you want their contact details. |

And it tastes like it too. Seriously the worst food I have ever had in Korea, hands down.
Yeah, you won't get much freedom if you live on the dorms in Korea. I taught in a uni where I lived in the dorms. They were simply a bed -- and most students had friends off campus they just stayed the night with when going out.
Bigger unis are OK, but being at several over my course here, I can say that campus life is also a bore. Sure you can play sports and drink the aforementioned soju EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT, but there aren't that many organizations or groups that meet regularly, and lack of good concerts, etc etc.
Just don't expect the same college feeling as back West, that's all. Studying and all, probably wouldn't care anyways, I guess. |
