I think you have to define physical punishment more clearly. Your options, seem to focus on the hitting of students.

Does a flick in the forehead constitute physical punishment?

What about making them stand with their arms up, possibly holding a chair over their heads, push ups, etc. ?

I sometimes yell and be a drill instructor when a class is out of control by being rude, not listening, rebelling, moaning, complaining, and not applying themselves. I sometimes mentally break them down and get them to bow to me and then I reward them through praise for excellent performance that follows a chewing out session. If they are still laughing, not listening to you, and chatting in Korean, then a more intensive drill instruction is needed which may involved hitting a desk and yelling very loudly. I don't take any lip off of them anymore. Classroom management and gaining respect is what makes the job hard and stressful.

If it's your first time teaching a class you really have to be hard on them for like the first month otherwise they'll walk all over you later

Nothing more than hitting them atop the head with a marker or book when they aren't paying attention. That's if I'm able to get to be in front of them and whap them, then they really aren't paying attention. Sleeping too. I've thrown things at them but usually just balled up paper or an eraser. Haven't had to physically remove a student in a long while, but I've done that as well.

Im guessing you would all find any kind of physical punishment abhorrent back home.

So why is it not here?

Korean and Indian children are the worst behaved children I have ever seen. But that does not justify doing something that is considered a crime back home.

If you are the teacher and it's your son or daughter...Are you allowed to smack them?

Does allowing my students to drink mad amounts of water before class and NOT permitting them to use the restroom until after class constitute psycological and physical punishment (for the students who have broken X infraction)?

I eyeball, tap my foot, drum my fingers (trying to look dramatic), put up my 'dukes' and scowl with a smirk, or I have a foam ball that can sometimes find the head of someone who is being disruptive ... I have a child with Special Needs in one class .. he has behaviour issues, and I've had to stand beside him with one hand on his shoulder keeping him in his seat while I continue to teach. I've never needed to have to use anything more than those.

My co-teacher on the other hand, was absolutely furious at a boy who fell against a huge potted flowering plant which she'd just put in the classroom this week ... that she repeatedly hit him (small finger side of a closed fist) on the arm, shoulder, back and chest a good 20+ times. Shocked (I sat back against a desk and waited until she was finished disrupting my class, offering a wink to kids around the classroom as they shuffled uncomfortably in their seats).

I think in Korea a flick on the forehead is not considered Physical punishment. Neither is a slight tug on the ear. I would say these are things Korean teachers do when they are mildly irratated.

I don't think we should ever go this far in the classroom.

Although, some students in other schools might deserve a whoopin of that magnitude, the students in this case definitely don't.

A good movie about corporal punishment is now available online. Look for XIN (pronounced Sh-in). A lotta teachers and a principal get whooped in that movie.
