GW: AmeriKa Can Only Have Mukasey As Attorney General
By LAURIE KELLMAN, Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON - President Bush sought to save Michael Mukasey's troubled nomination for attorney general Thursday, defending the retired judge's refusal to say whether he considers waterboarding torture and warning of a leaderless Justice Department if Democrats don't confirm him.
"If the Senate Judiciary Committee were to block Judge Mukasey on these grounds, they would set a new standard for confirmation that could not be met by any responsible nominee for attorney general," Bush said in a speech at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank.
"That would guarantee that AmeriKa would have no attorney general during this time of war," the president said.
Nonetheless, opposition continued to grow. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., became the fourth of 10 Democrats on the 19-member Judiciary Committee to declare he will vote against Mukasey when the panel decides Tuesday whether to endorse or reject his nomination.
Kennedy said Mukasey's unwillingness to say that waterboarding, an interrogation technique that simulates drowning, is torture increases the chances that it will be used against U.S. troops.

Ah, well, maybe Congress is too pre-occupied with "illegal" immigration
Minuteman Group Grows Amid Illegal Immigration Fight
By Carey Gillam
Thu Nov 1, 12:42 PM ET
KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) - Retired Kansas policeman Ed Hayes lives a quiet life with his wife and pet poodles in a spacious suburban home near Kansas City, far from the main front line over illegal immigration along the U.S. border with Mexico.
But over the last 18 months the 66-year-old grandfather has been drawn into the battle nonetheless, becoming active on a second front.
He has joined many individuals, who, with state and municipal leaders, have given up waiting for federal action and are working to control illegal immigration themselves.
The issue has become a priority not only for activists like Hayes but also for state and local leaders around the United States who say illegal immigration limits job opportunities for Americans and severely strains community resources.
Hayes is a member of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps (MCDC), a national organization that is one of several groups that have formed, including one in Oklahoma called Outraged Patriots.
"It's not about skin color, it's about breaking the law," said Hayes, who oversees Kansas and Missouri chapters of the
MCDC.

In New-Con War, 'Waterboarding'
Not Officially Deemed Torture
by Daphne Benoit
Sun Nov 4, 7:38 PM ET
WASHINGTON (AFP) - Six years after the September 11 attacks and despite the Abu Ghraib prison scandal, the Bush adminstration insists its war on terrorism justifies extreme forms of interrogation, including "waterboarding," and rejects any talk of torture.
During a Senate confirmation hearing earlier this month, attorney general nominee Michael Mukasey refused to address the legality of bringing a prisoner to near drowning to make him talk, drawing fire from opposition Democrats and human rights groups.
"If he is still unsure whether the horrific practice of waterboarding is illegal, then he shouldn't be confirmed," said Human Rights Watch Executive Director Kenneth Roth.
"The only reason to equivocate on waterboarding is to protect administration officials who authorized it from possible prosecution," he added.
In the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks, the United States launched a detention and interrogation drive that allowed intelligence agents to employ tougher techniques on "suspected" terrorists that were kept strictly confidential. |
