Let's put it this way - you will likely get a more atmospheric Christmas in Hong Kong than you will in Korea.

If I am paying, I always stay here:

http://www.stanfordhillview.com/en/index.asp

It's in Kowloon, and pretty well located in my opinion. You can probably even find cheaper rates on the net.

I don't know of any events as such, but Central/Wan Chai is were the fun is. There's actually a street leading up a hill (I can't recall the name right now) that is packed with bars, and is full of young expats and the like largeing it up. And if you like to punt, Macau is only an hour away.

Last time I was there over Xmas, I found the weather warm (and I am from Oz) but I recall locals wearing scarves and jackets.

I'll be there this Xmas, so maybe I'll see you around!

J.

sweet. just what i was lookin for. thx for the info. how's the expat scene? i'll be fresh off a backpacking trip, but i plan to do some major shopping, so i won't be moseying around in birkenstocks and beach shorts from JJ market. are the expats fairly open and chill, or on the stuffy side? i'll most likely be heading alone, so just curious as to what to expect.

I was there last year for New Year's Eve. It was OK. Nothing exciting. There were a few areas of activity on the 31st. My wife and I went to what basically seemed like the "Itaewon of Hong Kong." But there weren't any fireworks in that area. I think there are some fireworks that you can see if you are near the harbor.

We stayed in the Mirador Mansions, at the USA Hostel. We had a twin room ensuite for about US$42 per night. Then we went for a few nights to the Ibis Northpoint, which was about US$60 per night. I would have rather stayed at the USA Hostel the entire time. The location was excellent. Also it was right next door to the Holiday Inn, so we could get a resonably priced, yet still expensive, breakfast buffet in the mornings.
