It seems that singing, sex, and soccer don't mix.

South Korea's football governing body Friday suspended four players from national matches for a year and ordered them to work up to 80 hours of community service because of their midnight drinking spree during a regional tournament in July, according to a news report.
The South Korean national team finished third in this year's Asian Cup held in four Southeast Asian capitals, including Jakarta where the players went on the spree. The team's poor performance at that time resulted in the ouster of then head-coach Pim Verbeek, according to Yonhap News Agency.

Among the four players are striker Lee Dong-gook, 28, of the English Premier League club Middlesbrough and goalie Lee Woon-jae of domestic K-league Suwon Samsung. The 34-year-old Lee led his team into the semi-finals of the 2002 World Cup finals in South Korea and Japan. The two others are both domestic K-League

players: defender Kim Sang-sik, 31, and forward Woo Sung-yong, 34.

The four visited a local karaoke bar in Jakarta and were entertained by female hostesses on July 16, the day after the South Korean national team's upset 2-1 loss to Bahrain in the second group match of the Asian Cup group tournament, according to the Korea Football Association (KFA).

The goalie, Lee, had made a similar visit days earlier, the KFA said.

So are the lawmakers who were doing the same thing stood down for a year? I doubt it. Maybe the morals of soccer players are more important than the morals of people who run the country.

The JoongAng says:

The players earlier apologized for their conduct, which has been blamed for contributing to Koreas disappointing third place finish in the Asian Cup. We were too short-sighted, and we shouldnt have done it, Lee Woon-jae said in tears at a news conference earlier in the week.
The association also wanted to punish head coach Pim Verbeek, but he has already resigned from the team. A stern warning was issued to Verbeeks No. 2, Hong Myung-bo.
The penalty sounds harsher than it is. Since only FA Cup games are hosted by the association, the players are free to play in other tournaments, including the K-League, the countrys top professional football circuit.
During the Asian Cup, the four players were out drinking in a brothel with bar girls from around 10 p.m. until early the next morning two days before a match with Bahrain that Korea lost 2-1. The report first surfaced earlier this week in Newsis.
