Had an interesting chat last night with another teacher about the general differences in teaching boys and girls.
I teach at a boys HS and at a girls MS and the differences between the two are pretty extreme. Obviously my HS boys are under more academic pressure and so don't view their English classes as seriously as they do their other classes, but despite this, I'd say that the general participation levels with the boys is probably around 30% per class, whereas with the girls it's much higher, perhaps around 80%. If I throw a question at the boys I typically get about one or two responses, whereas with the girls, I get maybe 20 shouting out the answers. My buddy suggested that it could be a sex thing, meaning if I were female I'd possibly get more interest from the boys.
I Just wanted to get an idea from others who teach both boys and girls if they find the girls more responsive and, if so, is their interest in English sustained when the reach HS age or does it (as with the boys) begin to abate? |
