From Wikipedia:

"The terms gyopo or dongpo in Korean refers to persons of Korean ethnic descent who have lived the majority of their lives outside Korea. It can also mean simply any Korean who lives outside Korea."

I always thought gyopo only referred to someone who has lived the majority of their life outside Korea. But if gyopo can also be used to refer to someone who is simply living in the U.S. while getting his MBA, then what is he when he comes back to Korea 4 years later? Could he still be considered a gyopo since he's no longer living in the U.S. and only lived there for 4 years? Or was he only a gyopo while living in the U.S?

The def'n has changed over the years. Pre-IMF, the term gyopo referred ONLY to foreign-born Koreans. Going over to the States for a couple years to study did not make one a gyopo. You were just a foreign-educated Korean. That's it.

I guess def'ns changed when they needed to blame someone for the bad behavious some of them started doing when they came back. "Koreans would never take drugs, so you're not Korean. You're gyopo." My theory, anyway. Same goes for the inaccurate use of the term "Korean-American" when the person in question is NOT American, but a Korean-born Korean citizen who just happened to live in the States for a short time.

The definition is blurry and subject to continual hairsplitting (1st generation gyopo, 1.5 generation, 2nd generation). I suppose it's the friction between the absurdly exclusive nature of Korean identity and the inclusive nature of American identity. Or moreover, it's just that the whole gyopo concept is a bit outdated and belongs to a time when fewer people traveled abroad. It's still a meaningful concept, but the definition has gotten more confusing.
