I've been looking into getting a master's degree. And since I'm living in Korea (and I'll be here a while), it's looking like a distance learning degree is the right move.

I'm looking to get either an MBA or a master's in technical writing, preferably from a stateside school. But I haven't been able to find any that are 'distance learning' but also reputable.

Is anyone here getting a distance learning degree while in the ROK? If so, could you shed some light on what you are studying and how you found info on the school?

After searching these boards, I did find some posts on distance learning. The only thing of interest I found was the Sejong-Syracuse MBA you can get by actually attending classes here in Seoul. The Syracuse part sounds good, but I'm not certain about investing into getting a degree from a Korean school. Anyone have any experience with this one?

Also, if you all could point me in the direction of any trustworthy sites (not just netmercials sh1tty degree mills) that provide info on distance learning possibilities, it would be much appreciated.

Korea Sparkling!

As far as earning a Master's degree goes, getting one from a Korean university would mean that it is only held as valid in Korea. Not to sound snotty or anything, but that is unfortunately the stigma attached to a program less intensive than some high school economics programs back home. I believe there are some good online programs coming from Australia (University of Queensland, perhaps?). Hope this helps.

I'm taking some courses through the University of North Dakota. I'm not sure what's available in your field, but it might be worth checking out their distance education program. Not all the courses are available online, though. Some are still paper correspondence courses.

UQ is my alma mater and AFAIK does not offer distance learning. I've just finished my MA through Deakin and you can check them out at www.deakin.edu.au.

Would a PhD acquired at a Korean university be valid elsewhere?

I looked into doing the PhD program at Yonsei since I have just finished my MA in International Relations. Apart from being mostly coursework-based (WTF, for a research degree?) the consensus amongst long-termers here that I canvassed was that the thing would be fit for wiping your arse on.

Unless the rules have changed, the Open University will only let you study a couple of things while based in Asia.

I am finishing up my M.A. through Lampeter university in Wales. Not in a business related subject though.

I found it through a websearch. They were pretty picky about entry standards and needed references. They are also strict about deadlines etc.

The biggest issue is the time commitment. The recommended 20 hours a week of study is a good guideline I think. The amount of reading is incredible and you also need to be able to access other sources for books/journals.

Be prepared for a big commitment, though one which is really rewarding (IMHO).

^Tell me about it.

I've just started an MSc and have been overwhelmed with it so far. The first block is 300 hours over 6-months, which averages out at 15-hours of study per week, although you should really be putting in more if you can. With any luck, as the coming weeks progress, I'll find my academic hat and get down to it, but at the moment, it's a struggle staying motivated.

Like you said though, hopefully it'll be worth it come the end.

BS.Dos... it will happen for you. It takes a while to kick in those academic brain cells again.

I have really enjoyed the challenge...just my thesis to go.

If you find the general are ainteresting it is much easier to do, me thinks.
