|
|
Ah Pervez Musharraf. The dude just doesn't want to leave office. The ego of people is quite stunning sometimes...
Ny times article
Quote: |
The Pakistani leader, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, declared a state of emergency tonight, suspending the countrys constitution, blacking out all independent television news reports and filling the streets of the capital with police officers and soldiers,
The police blocked off the administrative center in the capital city of Islamabad today.
The move appeared to be an effort by General Musharraf to reassert his fading power in the face of growing opposition from the countrys Supreme Court, civilian political parties and hard-line Islamists. Pakistans Supreme Court was expected to rule within days on the legality of General Musharrafs re-election last month as the countrys president, which opposition groups have said was improper. |
His reasoning?
Quote: |
The order states that attacks by militants have risen to an unprecedented level of violent intensity and now pose a grave threat to the people of Pakistan. And then accuses the Supreme Court of hampering effort to fight terrorism.
The order accuses some members of the judiciary of working at cross purposes with the government by releasing some detained militants. It goes on to accuse the Supreme Court of overstepping the limits of judicial authority in a variety of areas, including economic policy. |
Attacks by militants hasn't grown recently. Same as it has been the past couple years. It is just a blatant attempt by Musharraf to continue his dictatorship. |

I think the point was that you said Musharraf was on "our side", but Loose Ends thinks that he is only on the side of the rich and powerful. |

Oh, I meant our side as in the side of "good", you know if you're not with us, you're with the terrorists sort of thing. Thanks for clarifying. |

He is a lot softer than the enemies of the US.
Oppostion leaders aren't killed in Pakistan
There are anti govt demostrations.
Now what happened if someone spoke out against Saddam Hussein?
they would be killed not only them but their family and not only would the family be killed but any female members of the family would be raped before killed.
that is the truth. |

The US invasion of Iraq also saved lives . Had Saddam been allowed to go free he would have killed off the Kurds and invaded Kuwait again.
It is not possible to deligitimatize the taking down Saddam. |

Well if Saddam wasn't such a killer the US wouldn' t have been so concerned about him being powerful.
Anyway I got a deal you people stop objecting to the war on humanitarian grounds and I won't defend the war on humanitarina groups.
Deal.
anyone who objects to the war on humanitarian grounds is either disingeous or ignorant. |

Joo, who cares? Iraq and Pakistan are unrelated.
Musharraf is hurting the political development of his country. If he had his country's interests as priority #1, he wouldn't be pulling this BS. Basically he is becoming like any other dictator out there. |

Pre-war, with Saddam, at least you knew how to stay safe, post-Saddam, no one is safe. NO ONE! |

Surprise surprise, Musharraf is detaining his opponents now:
News article
Quote: |
Police rounded up hundreds of opposition leaders and rights activists Sunday after Pakistan's military ruler suspended the constitution, ousted the top judge and deployed troops to fight what he called rising Islamic extremism.
Increasingly concerned by the unfolding crisis, the Bush administration said Sunday that American aid to Pakistan would be reviewed. The U.S. has provided about $11 billion to Pakistan since 2001, when Pakistan's president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, allied with the United States after the Sept. 11 attacks.
|
Time to cut that aid. |
