So who's eating lots of persimmons?

One thing I love about Korea, plenty of good cheap fruit.

I don't find fruit to be cheap at all! It seems as if everything is at least twice as expensive as it was just a few years ago, especially fruit ... but fortunately, persimmons aren't too unreasonable. I try to have five or so for lunch most days.

I have been eating those too, but I really like all those small soft mandarin oranges.

Fruit is not cheap in Korea, but it is very plentiful in Autumn as are veggies of many sorts.

cheap? ... free!

Persimmon trees line the roads of this small town and when I walk to work I pluck one or two. Last year a particular old woman used to scowl at me until she realized i saw her. This year she smiles and shuffles up to give me the best ones.

I have to avoid going down that street often because she's consistent with her generosity, her knowing I really like the fruit.

The chestnuts are also hanging over, inviting one to take them. But they aren't quite ready yet.

I get so much free green tea, hot peppers, fruit and barley given to me on my many walks. (I already miss the pear season)

Recipe for 감 Bread

2 eggs
1 1/2 cups flour
3/4 cups sugar (I used dark brown sugar)
1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 cups oil
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup persimmon pulp (You need the soft, squishy kind)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup walnuts
1/2 cup raisins

1. Set the oven at 325 F/165 C
2. Combine flour, cinnamon, salt, raisins, walnuts
3. Blend eggs, sugar, oil
4. Mash the persimmons into a pulp and add the baking soda, then add in the eggs
5. Fold in the flour
6. Oil a 9 x 4 bread pan and bake about 75 minutes.

Perhaps the most fun part is giving some to your Korean friends--they've never heard of 감 bread before.
