Just found out my counterpart has no diploma. Ha! Looks like I have some bargaining power!

How in the hell does one get away with that? I don't know if it's a fake or what, but this teacher has been around Korea for a while. I wouldn't rat him out, but if push came to shove, I'd mention it to my boss.

Should he be worried? Sometimes owners have some pull with immigration.

I don't know.

How much money could I get for ratting them out? Ha!

Save that 'chip' for a rainy day...like the co-worker acting like an arse or if your boss gets creative with your paycheck/airfare/severance.

Hmmmm....instead of taking the one, lump sum from immigration, you could ask him for installments to keep quiet.

How much is it worth? I guess it depends on how much of a slimeball you are. If you want to blackmail the guy...you can get what you get.

Just remember kharma is a biatch.

True, but luckily karma doesn't discriminate, which begs the question: what karmic payback awaits Mr. Illegal teacher and the wonjangnim?

In the past, Immigration has given rewards of up to 2 million won for reporting an illegal who is teaching on a tourist visa. If he has no diploma, then he has no E-2. If you're interested, you can contact your local Immigration office for more information.

You could turn the guy in, collect the reward, then take out everyone in the local Immigration office for drinks and night on the town. Make yourself some nice, helpful, well-connected friends very easily.

I think cost analysis is the way to go:

1. If you are a short-timer, then weigh W2 million lump from Immi against W175,000 from the wetback teacher; over 12 months, that adds up to W2.1 million. A nice enough vacation fund. Why kill the goose...? And you can turn over the information to your replacement next year.

2. If you are a long-timer, then MoS's suggestion makes good sense. After all, how did the hogwon bosses get the leverage to pull some of the things they do with Immi? Think of it as Career Investment Insurance.

No such thing as a reward for turning in illegal workers. Otherwise, Koreans would be following us night and day trying to find some evidence to prove we've illegal.
