We used to have our daily schedules always posted on the door. Then one day my wongjangnim told me that he was taking them down and didn't want me having them anywhere in plain sight since he was afraid of the "education association" coming and seeing how many students he has (at least I think that's what he was saying). Now I always get kids wandering around saying "who's teaching me today" between classes.

Is my wongjangnim just being his usual wacky self, is this usual and do you think he's dodging taxes or something?

I often ask myself this question everytime I see my wongjangnim and hear (second hand of course) what crazy scheme she has up her sleave this morning.

This sounds familiar!

Last year my hagwon hid all the attendance registars in a cupboard one day. Some guys in suits came sniffing around. The academic supervisor told us the deal later. To avoid extra tax the wongjangnim had covered how many students he had/how much money he was earning.

It's Korea dude. This stuff is normal/expected.

Aaaaah ok, that's what I thought.
And is me getting paid in cash normal or more tax-cheating on his part?

edit: did a quick search and it came up that "The net total of deductions from your paycheque should be roughly: 3.3% (Korean Tax) + (1.7% Health Insurance) + (4.5% Pension) = Net Deduction of 9%."
He's deducting 5% of my salary for "tax" and nothing separate for pension. Hmmmmm, getting more and more interesting.

I'm not in Korea yet, but I thought it was mandatory for both the employee and employer to contribute to the pension if the business has more than 5 full-time employees?

Hmmmm, if he's not paying into pension (and it IS a small hagwon so it might be legal) than 3.3% for tax and 1.7% for health insurance = 5% so what he's doing might be right. Will have to talk with him.

There are a lot of complex laws to do with class size, times, etc etc. It is also mentioned in 'Prisoner of Wonderland'. A lot of hagwons hide their schedules.

I feel secure at my place. Since I got here, 2 teachers have gone home and they received all of their pension, severance, housing deposit, etc. No problem.

However, what is THE LAW and WHAT THEY DO are (sadly) often 2 different things . . .
