Has anyone else heard about this? I've looked for other threads on this topic, but found nothing - did I miss it?

Starting December (I think - maybe it's January), you must be in your home country to get or renew your visa. Anyone know any more details or loopholes? I've also heard that they will include an interview at the embassy, in addition to the previously discussed background checks that will be required.

So people who want to live in Korea for several years must *beep* off home at the end of each contract, even if they are renewing? Great.

All you would have to do is take the return home ticket and sit for a few weeks until another school hired you and paid for your ticket.

What was posted in the other thread was that it's only for when you sign with a new school. I didn't pay much attention so I don't have much more information than that, but figured I should head this off at the pass before everyone gets all up in arms.

but that's the purpose of the visa runs to japan ... you don't need to leave the country when you renew an E2 visa, you only need to leave the country when you change employers, thus changing E2 visas.

where's the other thread??

I asked my resident expert in my school that is in charge of that type of stuff about that yesterday. She has heard not one thing about any of it. Where is this information coming from anyway?

It is mostly election campaign noise. Politician makes noise, newspaper reports it, it gets picked up and spread.

There is an election happening in December and then the noise will disappear for another year or 5.

1) There will be no more VISA runs to Japan. All VISAs must be obtained in the teachers' home countries.
2) VISA will not be renewable in Korea. At the completion of one year, if the teacher decides to stay at their current school, they must return to their home country and obtain their VISA there. ...

I have already handed over what Chachee99 wrote - to the relevant authorites - to have it checked...

at the moment we are still waiting for a response - but so far have been told THIS WILL NEVER BE IMPLEMENTED because it will cause an outroar from UNI's, Hagwons, Private Institutes etc - who seem to have more power here than government officials...

so just wait 1~2 weeks - and we will find out exactly what is the outcome and the NEW laws and I will publish it here...

In case you missed it from the link I provided, or were just too lazy to read it ...

I phoned Daejon Immi twice in the span of a week, spoke to two different officials and both told me the same thing: renewing your E-2 will be the same process as it always has been. As for Visa runs to Japan, I don't know, but I'm guessing nothing will change there either.

Until I hear something directly from immi themselves, I'm considering all this bollox a non-issue.

Agreed.

This is South Korea.

Laws on the books and laws enforced are two different things.

The suggested changes rock the boat too much.

A modified version will make it less inconvenient for Korean employers - bet on it.

I doubt it will be implemented, but if it did, it would only be another reason for me to stay and work in Japan when I finally leave my current uni (whenever that will be).
