Americans Strongly Desire Change Of Direction: Poll
Mon Nov 5, 8:29 AM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Sixty percent of all Americans strongly want the country to change direction after nearly seven years of President George W. Bush's rule, according to a new opinion poll released late Sunday.

The survey by The Washington Post and ABC News indicated that only 24 percent of those surveyed think the nation is on the right track, and three-quarters said they want the next president to chart a different political course.

A new direction is wanted not only by Democrats, but also by three-quarters of Independents and even half of Republicans, according to the poll.

More than six in 10 called the war in Iraq not worth fighting, and nearly two-thirds gave the national economy negative marks.

Meanwhile, about seven in 10 see an economic recession as likely over the next year.

There is evidence in the new poll that the coming battle for the White House is shaping up to be another hard-fought, highly negative and closely decided contest, The Washington Post said.

At this point, Senator Hillary Clinton, the Democratic frontrunner, holds the edge in hypothetical match-ups with four of the top contenders for the Republican nomination.

But her margins are far from comfortable against the two best-known Republican candidates, former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani and Senator John McCain, The Post said.

Not one of the leading candidates in either party has a favorable rating above 51 percent in the new poll.

Twenty-eight percent said they feel strongly favorable toward Clinton, but more than a third, 35 percent, have strongly negative views of her, the survey showed.

For the fourth consecutive month, President Bush's approval rating remains at a career low, The Post said.

Thirty-three percent said they approve of the job he is doing, and 64 percent disapprove.

MOSES = Ahkenaten aka Amenhotep IV.

Believe it was FREUD's last book which tackled this subject

Moses and Monotheism. Believe it or not, I've read it. I think it's the only book by Freud that I've read in its entirety.

I actually found his argument quite convincing, from a layman's perspective. However, I'm told that, in academic circles, the book is not highly regarded at all, even among people given to skepticism about religion.

Quote:
During his reign, the Pharaoh Akhenaten was able to abolish the complex pantheon of the ancient Egyptian religion and replace it with a single god, the Aten, who had no image or form.

Well the Aten was the sun disc right? Wouldn't that count as an image?

(EDIT: Just checked Wiki. Apparently, after a while, Akhenaten taught that the sun disc was just a representation of something that could not be seen or described.)

Quote:
Now Ahmed Osman, using recent archaeological discoveries and historical documents, contends that Akhenaten and Moses were one and the same man.

In a stunning retelling of the Exodus story, Osman details the events of Moses/Akhenaten's life: how he was brought up by Israelite relatives, ruled Egypt for seventeen years, angered many of his subjects by replacing the traditional Egyptian pantheon with worship of the Aten, and was forced to abdicate the throne. Retreating to the Sinai with his Egyptian and Israelite supporters, he died out of the sight of his followers, presumably at the hands of Seti I, after an unsuccessful attempt to regain his throne.

This manages to out-Freud Freud, who didn't go so far as to say that Akhenaton and Moses were the same guy. If I remember correctly, Freud's argument was that Moses was an amalgamation of two different leaders of an Akhenatenite cult. The leader who got them out of Egypt was, according to Freud, a different guy than the leader who ran the show when they were wandering around in the desert.

I disagree with that part of the program (among other things), I just thought it was an interesting way to look at history.

Contrary to popular belief, there is plenty of evidence to support the biblical narrative of the exodus.

'Interesting' is an interesting choice of words. To look at history according to the claims in the movie: the US is a crown colony of England.

This is one of the more poorly put together conspiracy theories. It's my guess some bozo put it together in a film-editing lab for the sole purpose of exploiting ignorant, paranoid people by selling them the DVD.

Maybe so, but hopefully it will get people thinking and talking about some things and perhaps get them interested in doing some research on their own.

A good book about Akhenaten (albeit fiction).

1/3 Of Popular Songs Reefer to Substance Abuse
By Randy Dotinga

THURSDAY, Nov. 8 (HealthDay News) -- Could country music be worse for kids than rock music? If you judge by the number of drug references in songs, a new study suggests the answer could be yes.

Researchers who looked at the bestselling songs in several genres from 2005 found that 37 percent of top country songs featured references to drugs compared to just 14 percent of rock songs.

"It's not like country music is as wholesome as mom and apple pie," said Ralph DiClemente, a professor of public health at Emory University who's familiar with the study findings.

But country couldn't hold a candle to rap music, whose singers referred to substance use in a whopping 77 percent of songs.

CONT'D ...

Interesting. I'm still watching it, but at 04:31 they list companies that bought put options on American Airlines and United Airlines shortly before 9/11.

Merrill Lynch/HSBC
Morgan Stanley Dean Witter
Bank of America
Raytheon
Lehman Brothers
General Motors
AXA Ra (Insurance company that owns 25% of AA)

All bought them through Deutsch Bank A.B.

I'd like to know more - exact figures - was it an unusually large amount, or a routine, small amount?

It would not be unusual to find all major financial institutions trading similar things at similar times. Also, it would not at all be unusual for a very heavily traded firm, like AA, to have both long and short positions within the same financial firm at the same time. Firms do not invest, typically, as a herd but rather have many hundreds (or thousands) of traders (and computers acting as traders) that make individual decisions for individual reasons.

Also, when 9/11 happened a small recession was either in motion or a near possibility. A large firm like AA, with financials as poor as AA (if I remember correctly), would be a fairly reasonable put. No?

I don't think it is an indication of any funny stuff.
