I teach a job interview class at the university level. As part of our discussions, the students are asked to share stories about their recent job interviews. These can be quite interesting, but what happened to one of my students last week really takes the cake:

While interviewing at the Doosan company (Doosan is a very large Korean company), the English section of his interview was conducted by a very unprofessional person who made his company look very bad. In case you know of anyone who works for the Doosan company, or is involved in conducting interviews there -- please take whatever steps are necessary to let management know about this situation. I have already told the student that he should write a letter to the company, detailing everything that took place.

My student was interviewed by a very large black man (during the interview, my student assumed that he was African American). Instead of asking the general types of interview questions one might expect, the interviewer got off on a tangent about Korean women, and how they were so beautiful. In fact, much of the interview centered around his obsession with Korean women and their beauty.

Seeking to change the direction of this both unprofessional and uncomfortable interview, my student (who speaks English fairly well) made the mistake of asking the interviewer if he was American. In response, the interviewer exploded in a tirade about... you guessed it.... how he is Canadian, and he hates Americans. Needless to say, my student was really shocked, and very put-off. He left, feeling as if his chance at a dream job with a large Korean corporation had been ruined because he wasn't comfortable with discussing sexy Korean women, and because he made the mistake of asking the interviewer the wrong question.

I'm not trying to create yet another mindless thread bashing Canadians, because most of my foreign friends happen to be Canadians (with the exception of a few Kiwis). Most Canadians I know are pretty civil in their disagreements we may have, and I like the Rocky Mountain Tavern. I am just in shock at how this interview was conducted, and that it happened at a major Korean company.

The "I hate Americans" part doesn't bother me so much as the unprofessional remarks the interviewer made about Korean women -- especially in an interview setting. That was just over-the-top.

I am amazed this guy was allowed to conduct interviews for Doosan. Obviously, they have no clue as to what he is talking about as he tries to determine a candidate's level of English ability. I told everyone in the class that it's most likely the Doosan company has no idea this man is saying these things, and that Doosan should be notified of what is going on.

If you work for the Doosan company, I hope you print this message and pass it along to the proper manager.

Maybe the angry 'interviewer' was hired by an outside agency. Seen a few of those interviewer jobs popping up here and there. Too bad the student wasn't able to recall the dude's name, could get the interviewer...uhh...on a list that encourages recruiters not to hire him in the future.

It's possible. I've done some TEPS interviews as well as some TSE testing through agencies in the past.
