I have looked at a number of university jobs, those for general english departments and for foreign language centres...and a number of them specify in the job ad that there is no severance offered, or that pension=severance.
Is this usual? How is it that they do not have to pay severance? |

I believe the labor law states that the employer must pay 1 mo salary for every 12 mo's worked. Anyhow, no severance = keep walking, for me at least...  |

| Unis on the private pension system are not obligated by this law. It is a double-suck whammy for us, unless you are able to stay 5 plus years in that pension system, and become fully vested. Seeing as many unis now kick you out after 3 years, it's more difficult. You have to transfer to a school with the same pension to keep building up to being vested. Otherwise, you get the pay-out, but don't get anywhere near the full amount they have been matching. It depends on how many years you stay. |

Yeah. Paying intonational pension obligates them to pay severance as well. Paying into a private pension there is no such obligation. Severence is then contractual.
My last uni paid into national, and they tried to not pay me severence. Labor kicked their ass and told them to pay it. My current uni pays into a private fund, but they included a completion bonus in my contract, so I get "severence" from them, too.

I'm glad I don't worry about that nonsense at my uni. Plenty of teachers have been here three-plus years. Some as many as six. |

Korean Labor standards act, article 34 sub 4 reads:
(4) In cases where an employer has enrolled in pension insurance program for retirees or a retirement lump sum payment trust as prescribed by the Presidential Decree(hereinafter referred to as �pension insurance, etc.�) for workers, whereby workers, as the insured or a beneficiary, receive lump sum payment at the time of retirement, or draw their pensions, it shall be deemed that the employer has set up a severance pay scheme in accordance with paragraph (1). The amount of lump sum by the retirement insurance, etc., however, shall not be smaller than that of severance pay pursuant to paragraph (1).

This means private universities enrolled in a private fund. |

| Thanks for the information. Uni gigs are not looking so great on the money side...less pay, no severance, with about 20 contact hours...public school might be the way to go, although not as much prestige I guess. |

Sounds more like a unigwon gig than a uni gig. True uni gigs are 12 contact hours or less fro decent money (2.7-ish) with 4-5 months paid vacation and completion bonuses.
Unigwons are just glorified hogwons. |

Yeah...TEFLing is a real "prestigious job, right?  I bet you go around telling everyone your a University professor, don't you.....  |

Sadly, those glory days are on their way out. The jobs are few and far between. Some people who are experiencing this change have become downright mean, nasty, and angry to be around.

I agree and you'd be crazy to think you'd find a position such as this without an MA in TESOL or Linguistics and several years of university teaching experience. You'd have to be really naive to think you could find such a position without any formal teaching qualification and straight out of a Korean hawgwon. 2.7? Maybe but without housing. |
