Hi All,
This is my first time applying for teaching positions in Korea and I was wondering if anyone had any info on Pagoda Academy. They're interested in interviewing me, but I haven't been able to get much info out of them besides the fact that they teach EAP, which I'm interested in. Yet they're not a university. Any warnings, stories, praise? Thanks.
Also, I heard there was a blacklist of schools on this site, but I can't find it. A little help? |

Hi there
Try doing a search on Pagoda, every couple of months someone asks about them. A lot of people think they're awful, but I'm sure there are worse places out there. I was interviewed by them, and considered it, but was scared away by all the fine print in their contracts. They strike me as more than a little sleazy. |

Yeah, I'm getting the feeling after doing a search. I just had an interview and the guy seemed all right and honest, but sad. Plus the housing and vacation situation seems sketchy. Any opinion on what the best school to teach with is for adults only? YBM? CDI? Wallstreet? Any others? [/quote] |

PAGODA: TEACHING ADULTS--SPLIT SHIFTS, GOOD PAY, BUT MUST WORK HARD, FINE CLAUSE IN CONTRACT--WHEN A STUDENT DROPS OUT, YOU MUST PAY FOR IT, MONETARY...SALARY--GOOD--3.7, BUT WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE AROUND 2.5...
IAN WINDSOR IS THE HR FOR PAGODA IN SEOUL--HE'S LOOKING FOR THE BEST.
YOU GOTTA BE ON TOP OF YOUR GAME--GRAMMAR, WRITING STYLES, ETCETERA--A LOT, BUT NOT ALL OF THESE ADULTS YOU'LL BE TEACHING WILL KNOW AN "ILLITERATE" FROM A SEASONED PRO!!!
BEST OF LUCK IN YOUR REALLY NEW, AND AWESOME ADVENTURE IN KOREA... |

Pagoda does not pay for 10 days of vacation the law says you are entitled to. They are white enough to give you a whole 40 hours of vacation, though.
Direct English, a subsidiary of Pagoda, does not give you ANY paid vacation at all.

Look no further. Pass on anything they offer you. |

Ah, see when you said "fixed" I thought you meant that problem had been fixed. How do they legally get away with that? They're a big company, not a small hagwon that changes its name every 6 months. |

Yeah, but you've gotta pay for your housing. Why would you pay for something that most jobs in Korea give you for free? Oh, and the whole "if your student drops out, you have to reimburse the money" is pure crap. Imagine that ass kissing you would have to do there. It's not for me, but I'm sure there are some people that would like the "challenge" and "high salary" |
