Pencils, Shmensils...
We used to hang our kids outside of the windows from our 8th floor hogwon...Don't really know if it worked or not, but damn, it was fun! |

In my experience you don't want to go overboard too much. Being really angry every now and again when you are normally seen as a calm, level-headed, laid-back and nice teacher worked to restore order when I taught kids. But you know, kids will get used to the fireworks in a short time, and then what?
Silence works best in small classrooms. When they realize you are not talking, they will shut themselves up, wondering if you will erupt or not.
Going overboard in "discipline" can only do more harm than good. Worse yet, I think it'll cause the students to lose any shred of respect they had for you.
I'm not sure what to do with my college students, still, as it's hard to remain silent and get results. There will always be that small group who will continue to talk no matter what. But you can better believe no matter how much their apathy sets off a nerve inside me, no chair will go out a wondow. |

WaterBaby: yeah, I'm a fairly happy person and generally quite laid back- some of my classes are really going so well, with a great atmosphere...but with the others theres one or 2 problematic individuals that are bored, and they talk on regardless or get their homework books out constantly etc.
I'm only a month or so at this hakwon so I was a little disturbed at having to wrestle a book off one of them, and physically drag her outside etc, don't like the chaos this whole performance engenders...I reported her to the Korean headteacher, I'll see what happens, but i'm proud and I'd much prefer to be able to deal with it all myself.
But its kindf a relief to find that virtually nothing makes me angry anymore, because losing my temper generally results in a bad day overrall. |

Do pencils magically disappear when they go out the window where you are at? Because where I am from, if I did that there is a good chance it would hit someone. |

Yeah that was kinda my point. I remember some kid threw an eraser out the window at my old hawgwon - hit someone, and let me tell you they raised SHIT at the front desk.
Honestly I hope you guys are joking about throwing stuff out the windows - guess it'll just take someone getting whacked in the head, that someone coming up to complain, your kids ratting you out in an instant (dont think they wont) and your manager or supervisor yelling at you, before you figure out why it is wrong. |

No im totally serious.. But the kids got me back for it. One time the kids threw something of mine out the window and used my excuse.
Oops im sorry teacher. It was an accident. I was aiming for the wall.. Not the window. |

I had this one kindergarten student who would always be running around the room out of control. He had this habit of flying things like plastic bags and toilet paper out the window. "Teacher - kite". He would eventually let them go floating away. We were on the 7th floor. It concerned me since the supplies were always kept near the window. One day he lobbed a crayon out. I asked the supervisor to move us to one of the rooms without a window (2 of  . He laughed it off so I asked the Korean teacher to leave the materials in a better location. This was ignored. One day upon arrival at the school I found the entire supply of crayons on the ground under his classroom window. It turned out to be his fault. 7 floors. That class was above the entrance to the building. Good thing he didn't throw the open box of 12 pairs of all-metal scissors. I expect that could potentially kill someone. |
