My school received a phone call Monday. The person on the phone was asking if I could help the Ministry of Education (MOE) interview potential foreign English teachers for employment in the Gangwondo public school system. Have any of you been asked to do the same thing? Supposively, it's a big thing (according to my school). They are sending a car, a representative, everything to pick me up. It has been approved by immigration and I am being compensated for my time. I am wondering how they heard about me? My publications maybe? There are A LOT of English teachers in Wonju (or even Gangwondo for that matter) from which to choose.

I had that happen once. I was told it was to interview teachers at another private gov't school. I assumed they meant foreigners. Shockingly, I found they wanted me to interview Koreans who wanted to teach English at that school.

It scared the hell out of the job candidates, let me tell you...

They paid me 100,000 won for 2 hours of work. I didn't even ask for pay, but they slipped me a white envelope.

Well it's a great idea. Ask them if you can see their CVs and phone their references, too, especially the ones that send your BS detector off the chart.

It's a great idea to have Native Speakers interview the candidates. How many of us have been stuck with an English coteacher who we can't have a simple conversation with? They may be able to fool the korean interviewer, but if the Native Speaker can't understand them, methinks there's a problem.

I think you should totally ask about degree verification. At the beggining of the interview. The middle. And the end. But for the second and third time, pre-arrange for a korean to come in and hand you a slip of paper. After pretending to read the paper, you should say: "I'm sorry but we need to verify your degree again. It seems a Korean in Busan has been caught with a fake degree and this has created an emergency for degree verification nationwide."

I think I mentioned in another thread I did some TEPS interviews for some companies, and they just told me to interview the candidates as if I were in my own country. So I did. A couple easy questions, so they can relax, a couple standard (to us) job questions--nothing about how many bottles of soju they can drink--then because it is an English interview I threw a couple grenades (questions they couldn't possibly have prepared for or memorized) to catch them offguard so I can hear their real abilities. Silly questions like "If you were an animal, would you rather be a monkey or a donkey, and why?" They have to think on their feet.

Young F,

I like that. I hope they ask me to do the same (i.e. interview as if back home).
