My school has had me teaching between 20 to 17 hours until this week. I was just informed that GEPIK is now telling schools that the native English speaker must work a minimum of 22 hours. Are any other GEPIK schools doing this, or are my teachers lying to me?

Some other teachers have mentioned this happening to them as well during the past week. I was teaching about 19 hours a week during the first semeseter and then I had a couple of extra classes and a class of moms added to my schedule to get me up to 22 this semester. I always thought I was fortunate to teach only 19, so I can't complain that I'm teaching the full amount that I'm required to.

I'm at 18 classes a week not counting a teacher's class and the after school program.
I don't think there are any plans to increase my workload here and I'm with GEPIK too.

I know someone who was only teaching something like 19 hours so they made him teach the teachers at the school for an extra 3 hours to make up the 22 hours.

I was supposed to be doing two teacher classes and a parent class. So I should have been at the 22 mark. Right now I am teaching 1st and 2nd yr students and an after-school class. It is going to be interesting to see what they make me teach at the next schedule change.

My boss told me this last week (or was it the week before??):

http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=102338&highlight=GPOE

My boss was told by the GPOE official that came to our school that FTs must be made to work as much as possible, and that if the GPOE had their way, no foreigner would ever get a winter or summer vacation.

Of course my boss is a nice guy, so he does what he can to make things easy for me. Wink

Thanks, I forgot to do a search for 22 hours. I merely went through the topic list looking for something similar to my situation. I'll remember to search also next time.

You might want to check on that. It's looking like things are gonna stop being so *easy* in Gyeonggi. I might opt for a rural position next year...

They'll get the fucked up teachers they deserve with attitudes like that.

I work 20 hours per week but I get paid overtime for two extra classes I do on top of that. I have never been told of this 22 hour rule. I believe my contract says that I must teach 20 hours per week. I work in a really rural location so I wonder wether they cut me some slack as a result. (they like me on a personal level so that helps too).

Rolling Eyes I'm sure a hundred or so teachers going to labor for their legally mandated vacation is exactly what he wants to deal with.
