I'm going to start playing "Foot volleyball" with the Korean teachers but I'd like to know how it's played before the first match so I don't go and make an ass of myself. I was told it's similar to table tennis, but I really am clueless when it comes to sports.

Does anyone know how the game is played?

Rule No. 1: Vice Principal's team always wins, unless the Principal himself happens to be playing on the opposing team, in which case they are the winners. Rolling Eyes

Let the oldest Korean do all the work, stand back, and pretend you are interested.

I played that today-at first it was supposed to be real volleyball, but you can only expect so much from soft pansies...

Yes. When I asked about the rules again, I got the same answer...apparently it's pretty easy, especially since a lot of the older guys at work play it.

If it's what I think you mean then it's simple. The ball will come over the net. It can bounce in your court once. Then your team should take a maximum of three kicks to hit it back over the net without it touching the ground again on your side.

Different groups of guys play variations on those basic rules.

The game is called Sepak Takraw in both English and Malaysian/Indonesian (the origin of the current full title; the origin of the word Takraw appears to be Thai).

It's a great sport. At my ward in June last year, the Bishop did one of those back-flip kicks and the ball broke part of the piano in the cultural hall/gym part of our chapel. He was kind of proud of that.

Oh, and don't think that it's pretty easy. If both teams aren't good players, then it might be easy. Good players can make it quite a challenging endeavor.

Rules in Korea are made to be ignored. Who cares what the rules are no one else does.

*sigh*, ask a simple question and this is what you get.

the rules are quite simple but it's different from sepak takraw (in sepak takraw the ball can't touch the ground, so it's MUCH harder).

eamo is right about the the three kicks, but you can let it bounce off/touch the ground between every kick/head. you don't have to let it bounce, you can volley it back with your leg or head directly if you want, but usually it's easier if you let it bounce once.

so basically the game goes something like this:

serve -> one bounce -> kick/head -> another bounce -> kick/head -> another bounce -> kick/head over the net and repeat ad nauseam.

the second kick/head is similar to setting the ball in volleyball and the last kick/head that sends it over the net is similar to the kill. like volleyball, you usually have one dedicated guy for setting and killing. although that depends on your skill level though. at the lower skill levels, you're mainly concerned about getting the ball over the net and hoping the other side screws up. so you play a lot more defensively.

i thought you could chest the ball as well like soccer, but apparently only the head and legs are allowed.

it's a fun low impact sport, i think you'll like it.

It is a lot of fun! What I've discovered is that it's best to let the star player take "your ball" if he goes for it, especially since he's an older guy and always shouts "Mine!"

It's amazing how good some of the older guys are. It's pretty slow-paced. They keep telling me "No fast--play slow." Good advice.
