I've called 02-1355 about a dozen times. I ask if there is someone who speaks English and they either immediately hangup on me, or I get a ringtone for about a minute before it disconnects.

Any ideas on how I can talk to someone before I have to physically go down to the office?

What information do you need before you go there?

Where are you located? There is one in the building/connected to the Yoongpoon bookstore, 6th floor, joonggak subway line # 1. I'm not sure of the exit #?

Basically I got a letter (in Korean) stating that my employer hasn't been making pension contributions lately and I want to verify the total in my account before confronting them.

IT might be difficult to actually visit them (I live in Seocho-gu) because I work daytime hours (9:00-4:00) - although to be honest I don't know their office hours.

If you do a search on www.galbijim.com you should be able to find what you need.

yeah maybe that's where i found that info before, but galbijim seems like it's bunk;

http://wiki.galbijim.com/index.php/Korean_pension_plan

everything comes up as "no info on this page."

I think they are open until 6:00 p.m., at the least the one which I mentioned before is.

If you go there, they should be able to give you a print out of what has/has not been paid into your account/non-account.

That's good that the pension office warned you and gave you a heads up to the real and silent problem situation.

I noticed that when I call anyone who doesn't or want to speak English, they just hang up immediately. I even had mothers hang up on me at the precise time a telephone interview/test is scheduled.

You should visit your local pension office in person and inquire about the situation and then speak with your director in a calm voice directly about the problem and how unacceptable and shameful it is. Then ask what we can do to solve the problem in a tactful manner. If director fails to fix the problem, then calmly make a threat to report him/her to the pension, tax, and labor offices while blacklisting the school on the internet which will cause long term losses. Emphasize in a calm way that this is not the way to go as it would be a shame to hurt the school, it's teachers, and it's students.

I know this sounds so Jerry Fallwell, but being calm and bringing shame to the situation means a lot in Korea rather than arguing an issue.

shame on the galbijim though - it used to have the locations and phone numbers of all the regional pension offices.

finally reached an english speaker. sounds like the pension office has TEETH these days. they told me my employer hasnt paid for 3 months - not just me, but korean staff as well. then told me if necessary, they will seize the employer's accounts/assets.

Laughing

funny how just a couple months ago, trying to get pension, the official just said "we have no legal power...you'd-da bedda find new boss-uh.

In Seocho Gu there is a pension office near Shinsa station. It's just up from the station in the direction of Apkujeong. Can't miss the big NPS on the building.

Cheers

Oh yes... they yelled ay my last employer, forced him to pay me my full year of pension, and THEN fined him 5 million personally (not the school). Sucker.
