I heard about this from some Korean acquaintances last night. They said he was convicted in the U.S. of possession of child pornography.

Had the something happen to a teacher my first few weeks in China. One of the teachers that I was working with was wanted my the FBI for a sex crime in the states.
He was arrested and was waiting for his trail. So he took off to China thinking that the Chinese would not turn him over to US authorities. He was right about the Chinese not turning him over to the US authorities. Instead they just refused him a visa and kicked him out of the county. After living on the streets in HK for about a month, he turned himself in to the US authorities in HK.

That's a relief. The better they are at catching them, the better for everyone. It's been a long time for the system to come around though, but whatever I'm not complaining. Hell, it's better late than never.

first- messing with kids is wrong.
second- i am not computer savy. surf? OK. send e-mail? OK. other than that...i am but a consumer.

such stated...who knows what is "on" our computers. viruses. spam. crud. god only knows where it comes from and god know where it goes. am told that nothing is ever really "deleted".

so, for the sake of conversation. you get some spam. it is crud. you delete it quickly. somewhere in that spam is illegal stuff. have you looked at it? no. is it still there? since nothing is ever really gone, it is still there. that spam/bug/virus latches on and spreads to e-mail you send out.

aren't you now guilty of possessing and distributing illegal stufff? yes, you say- what about intent? try to prove your innocence. hard to prove that you didn't do something when the evidence says you did.

are we all criminals now (both inside and outside of korea) merely awaitntg prosecution based upon the whims of the needs of the state?

Uh-oh, someone saw something they wish they didn't...

He was tried and convicted of it. They don't try and convict you for the remnants of a file that you accidentally downloaded. In fact, they wouldn't even search you out. Two ways people are arrested for child porn.

1. They turn their machine to get fixed up for whatever reason, the repairman sees a folder titled "Kiddy Porn" and calls the cops.

2. Their library is so extensive and they share so much online that the FBI or whatever group, investigates, tracks them down, and makes an arrest.

Either way, it is more harmful and purposeful than an "oops"....unless you live in Kansas.

so...yes there is kiddy porn potentially on all of our computers and it is only through lack of prosecution that we are not convicted criminals?
