Hello-
I am planning on coming over to teach in March. I would like to get a jump start working on my masters while I am over there. Does anyone take online classes from an American University while in South Korea? How does that work out?
Thank you |

I take distance courses through the University of North Dakota while in South Korea. Some of the courses are online, and some of them are traditional correspondence courses in which things are sent through the mail. I'm happy with the courses, but they aren't in the field of ESL or education, so I'm not sure how useful this information is for you. |

I'm studying for a Masters in a non-teaching discipline, although mine is a correspondence course which involves mountains of reading. It's tough going motivational wise, and I've only just started. Be prepared to make sacrifices. If you're working 40-odd hours per week, getting home after a demanding day and hitting the books takes some doing.
It'll probably be worth it, but it's going to be a long old slog. |

Iv'e heard there is quite a bit of down time during the working day for ESL teachers. Would that be a good time to do work for the online classes? |

There are other threads too...you'll get much more info with a bit of searching than relying on this thread.
Quite a bit of down time? Depends on your place of employment.

My advice is to get started in your job first and see what it's going to demand of you. Then start coursework slowly. I'm a little overcommitted right now, as I'm teaching more than fulltime and am taking two courses. As Bs.Dos. said, "If you're working 40-odd hours per week, getting home after a demanding day and hitting the books takes some doing." |
