I have been applying for several jobs that offer a housing allowance rather than housing. How would I go about getting an apartment? Are there real estate agencies that help foreigners? Is it possible to get a place with a western style system of paying a deposit (not the millions of won in key money but a reasonable deposit) and then paying rent every month? I want a place for myself and my wife so sharing isn't an option. I also don't want to live in Itaewon or Kangnam--the burbs of Seoul are fine. I just don't want to have to fork over all of my savings and/or salary for a place to live. Sorry for the newbie-like naivite--I've had my housing provided in all of my previous jobs.

The best bet is to take a Korean person with you to help with negotiating the contract. There are places that cater to foriegners but as far as I know they are only in Itaewon (the hole).

Good luck.

In my smaller city there are several free advertising newspapers that come out each week, typically in boxes by bus stops. In Korean for Koreans, but it doesnt take much effort to figure out the real estate jargon in the housing section. No agencies taking a fancy cut out of foreigners. A Korean friend to help with phoning & meeting the potential landlord is quite necessary if your Korean isnt up to it, but this approach might be your best bet to getting a fair deal. Worked for me.

Get a Korean friend to go with you to some budongsans (real estate agencies) in the areas that you'd like to live. Or get him or her to visit Findall and look online.
