| And a follow-up to my post about the Classic's sound quality. Apparently it uses a cheaper Cirrus audio chip than previous generations, which used a Wolfson chip. So, perhaps I'm not insane for noticing a difference after all. |

There are many video players that are better than the iPod. The original question was about music, and I maintain that the iPod and iTunes are the easiest way to manage and navigate a large music collection on a PMP. |
iTunes is incredibly difficult to manage music. |
improperly tagged music makes it difficult. |

One reason I want to buy an IPOD is because Korean models are actually extremely overpriced for the memory you get. So many of my students spent 200,000 won for a fraction of the gigabytes. What Korean model gets close to having a lot of memory like that at such a good price? Plus, the IPOD is an English. I would assume Korean MP3 players are in Korean. What other brands are there besides the IPOD with English or that are from America or Japan? One of my co-workers has the 80 g classic, and she hasn't voiced any complaints from what I know. |
I wouldn't go with a zune. I don't think there is dedicated Korean mp3 player that comes close to the storage capacity of an ipod. Apple has conquered the mp3 market and the Korean market has shifted it's focus on pmps. |

Care to elaborate? The Zune 80 has the same storage as the Classic 80, will likely have better sound quality(yes, IMO, but I've owned a Classic for 3 weeks and was unimpressed,) and has more features. Of course, there are reasons to go iPod Classic over Zune 80, and those would be if you prefer the design, are heavily invested in iTunes, or prefer the interface. Frankly, the latter reasons are not important to me, but are for some people.
Here is how I'd go:
If I wanted a 160gb device, well, there really isn't any question, get the Classic 160.
If I wanted an 80gb device, I'd go with a Zune 80 (pending reviews, but preliminary reports are glowing.)
If I wanted an 8-16gb device with (good) video, I'd go with a Touch (and this is what I have on order atm. Should arrive today.)
If I wanted a small device, there are more than enough to choose from. I got my wife a D2 earlier in the year and have been very satisfied with it (when I get to use it.)
I'm more or less brand agnostic at this point. SQ and features are very important to me, as well as the actual size of the device. (Pocketablity is a must.) |

I'm not positive, but I think that's only for stuff you, ahem, squirt onto someone else's zune. I believe that was one of the big misconceptions of the original zune that got blown all out of proportion and was never corrected (because, let's face it, nobody really cared) by the mainstream media. |

Last night, i bought an item with a sticker price of 14,990won. On the final receipt it listed the item at 14,990.
Then at the bottom, before the total, 10% of that was added as an unspecified 'tax'.
This was at daegu costco. |

Well, all I can say is that your Costco is effed.
Check out this receipt.
You can pretty clearly see that the prices all have taxes included (except the one item which is tax exempt.)
At the bottom of the receipt, you can see that 3,990 (untaxed item price)+ 26,236 (pre-tax amount) and 2, 624 (10% tax) all add up to 32,850 (which is exactly what the price tags on the items adds up to. |

| I've given up on the iPod. I loved the UI it is definately the easiest use. Much better than some others I have tried. I think itunes is okay. I ripped most of my music. What I didn't like was the battery. Also the sound quality isn't that great. If you look up reviews for the ipods you will notice that a frequent complaint about it is that it only sounds average. I'm going to be giving the creative zen or a meizu a try. A friend of mine has a meizu and it has great sound and nice video and its about the size of a credit card. The UI isn't as good as an Ipod though. A plus about the meizu is that it can play flac. Also the meizu isn't that expensive. I'm more interested in the creative zen, mainly because it has an SD slot. |

I think the hard part will be converting the music to another, non-apple player. All the names will be wacky (unless, that is, I'm still operating off of old information). |

I don't doubt it. I'm just referring to the file information. Again, it might be old info, but Itunes used to rename every file to some odd file names that only Itunes and Ipods would recognize.
But, if you've ripped your cds again this isn't a problem, anyway. |

I heard they have programs that can downsize outrageously large jpegs......
I would much much rather use itunes than the zune marketplace...
Plus I heard you can only use zune marketplace with your zune for purchases mp3's.
Zune will probably go the way of the creative mp3 players....dead.
I've had an ipod mini for 3 years and it's still as good as the day I got it. Never had a problem and the battery life is still strong. I wouldn't replace it with anything other than another ipod. |
