Try this with your students.
Today I made a joke with a few of them, going up to them and saying
'hellohowareyounicetomeetyouI'mfinethankyouandyou?'
The funny thing is although they say this and act as though they can't say anything else, I think it's a kind of joke for them also...
Because when I said this to them, they recognised the joke imediately and most of them fall to the floor in fits of laughter! None felt angry or upset with me, they just thought it was absolutley hillarious...
It's an in-joke for them too. A lot of them do know other expressions but don't want to say them our of shyness or nervousness / laziness.
I'll be doing it all day now, their reactions are priceless...!
Try it, go right up to one and say
"HihowareyunicetomeetyouI'mfinethankyouandyou?'
And then walk off. It's so funny. (I wouldn't do it if I thought it was upsetting them or souring our relations.)

Yeah, Korean kids are thick-skinned about stuff like this. They think their accents and such are hilarious. I have a habit of pronouncing words like a Korean sometimes (always as a joke, I make sure they hear the real pronunciation a couple times beforehand), and it never fails to get them laughing.
But yeah, it's very odd for Westerners to see people laughing at something like this. I'd be mortified if I was learning a second language and my native teacher mimicked my horrible pronunciation as a joke... |

Right. If my Spanish teacher did that to me I'd probably stop studying with them.
I think it's mostly because the students know they could do better but don't bother or don't want to. So they're not really the butt of the joke -
WE ARE.
Also I think another reason is that there's not a lot some of them can say to me and vice versa at the moment because of language barriers (they're elementary pupils,) so they don't mind letting me come down to their level. |

Really, it seems like, on a personal level, Koreans don't mind people laughing at their expense. I really see this quite often (even amongst adults and such) where someone will be in a high-pressure situation and they'll mess up, everyone will laugh, but the person just kind of recovers and keeps moving, as if a whole room of people hadn't just laughed at them.
I think it's interesting how much it contrasts with how personal many Koreans take criticism of their culture. I suppose it's maybe a byproduct of the whole community vs individuality-oriented culture.
Oh, and I think your point about coming down to their level is a good one. It's the same as if you speak any Korean with them (although I think too much can hurt things)... I think it helps bonding when they know that you're learning Korean while they're learning English. |

Everytime my students do something stupid, I pretend to hit them over the head with a rolled up stack of paper (not actually hit--just close) and yell "ayyyyyeeeeesssshhhhiiieeeee!"
Its always funny to them. It never gets old. I must've done it fifty times by now, and the fifthieth time got as much laughter as the first time did. |

That probably works better than my looking heartbroken and banging my head against the chalkboard. |

one of my students today was working on an assignment for me -- he got a few answers right and he looked at me and pointed to himself and said 'me'. then he pointed to his head and said 'brain'. then he did a thumbs up and said 'good'. |

I always joke with my students, They make fun of me and I make fun of them. It's all in good fun and helps you get closer to them so they will actually care to do their work and show interest. |

I was trying to explain "propose" before showing "Mr Morton" to my kids. I got on my knee and said, "What am I doing?"
"You're at Anyang station! Doni juseyo, doni juseyo!" |

As for your other question--you truly are stupid. I believe I've alluded to my women's college days AND mentioned my boyfriend enough. |
