1. you got in, closed the door, the window smashed.
How does this not make it your responsibility? |
You're assuming too much. Just because it smashed when he closed the door does not automatically make it his responsibility. It may be...it may not be...it just depends on how reckless he was in closing the door. |
You'd have to slam a car door pretty fucking hard to make the window smash. In fact, the windows are not tight in place like a windshield, making them nearly impossible to shatter without a sharp object. I once saw this gigantic redneck beating on a dude's driver-side window in the parking lot of a bowling alley. One of these big burly dudes you do not even look at, you know, really laying into this window. Nada.
There must have been a crack in the window when OP guy was unlucky enough to get in. Or else he's making the whole thing up. |
Nope....the above is all true. I just posted coz I was feeling bad for the taxi-driver. But I still think its ultimately not my responsibility because there must been something wrong with the window before I got in the car.
The way the taxi-driver reacted makes me wonder if he had no insurance actually.

| it's 100% NOT your fault, and i don't think you overreacted in the least! i wouldn't have waited around for one second in that situation - sorry, dude, i'm late! tough tittie about the window... he had no right to lay a hand on you and he would have probably been decked for doing that in any other country... |

Oh, it's the Internet Tough Guy. Haven't seen you since berjanerno-korea was waxing on about his pedophilic tendencies. But thank you for gracing us with you presence and your unique, if not feeble-minded outlook on life. Most of us have to actually deal with people on a near daily basis; believe you me, that is no easy feat. Thus we don't often have the time or are in the position to paint life with such broad, binary strokes - open/close, speak/listen, fight/fuck. Not that I'll be rising to any fights in the near future due to your insistence that 'hand on body (male) = fight', I do appreciate the fresh outlook. |

1) Your director sounds like a decent guy if he stepped up and paid for it and isn't giving you the evil eye.
2) It doesn't cost 100,000 won to fix a broken car window. Half that. |

um.... all i said was that in most of the places i've been, yelling at and restraining someone (especially for something that's CLEARLY not their fault) is aggressive behaviour and a recipe for an aggressive response!
edit: i'm not saying that i would have punched him, rather that if i was the taxi driver, i wouldn't dare pull that kind of crap because of the swift and harsh response i'd expect to receive...

Stupid-ass taxi driver closed the automatic window on my wife's hand as she was getting into the taxi. She had gotten in, and pulled on the window frame to close the door. Just then, the driver closed the window (the windows on Hyundai Sonatas go up SUPER fast). It smashed her finger, and she began screaming/bleeding profusely.
The taxi driver refused to drive her to the hospital! He didn't want to pay for the damages! Instead, he insisted he take her to the pharmacy for a band-aid. She screamed at him until he took her to the hospital. She got him to pay for her hospital bills, and contacted his company. He was an "illegal" driver, meaning he wasn't the one listed as who should be driving the taxi. She threatened to make a stink out of it, and they ended up covering all costs with no police involvement.
It was two weeks before our wedding photos, and she ended up having to hide her finger, which was wrapped in a mini-cast. She lost a big chunk of skin. |

Would have been handy if the OP was carrying a pet rock.
Could have taken it out, and then started pointing to the nearest fence or hedge while shouting STOP, CATCh THAT GUY!!! |

Yep....my hagwan director is a pretty decent sort of guy but he actually didnt offer to pay. He just tried to tell the cops and the taxi-driver my side of the story.
Anyway I think I'm going to end up paying for half the window....which I'm happy to do. Although the taxi was old and its more than likely something WAS amiss with the door-window, theres no way anyone can prove anything either way. Seems like the taxi-driver WASNT insured, which seems to be pretty common among them, according to my hagwon director anyway.
Chalk this one up to experience I think.......lol.

I know mate. If I was in my home country I wouldnt be paying a cent at all BUT living here makes things a little more complex.
ie. I dont want my Korean co-workers thinking all I care about is money, (which many, if not most Koreans do). I dont want my Korean co-workers thinking I dont give a damn about causing damage to other peoples property, esp. other Korean peoples property.
Many variables to consider than just purely whose responsibility it waz.

Interesting thing happened to me today. I usually walk but today I was running a little bit late so I decided to catch a taxi to my haekwon.
Anyway I got in the taxi, closed the door and "smash"....the door window shattered into a thousand pieces. Naturally enough I was highly embarrassed and apologised profusely. The taxi driver got out, walked around to the door, looked at it for a while and then demanded W100 000. I refused and tried to explain to him in my broken Korean that I was very sorry but it wasnt really my responsibility coz it was an accident and it was his taxi after all -NOT mine.
We started arguing and he started grabbing me. I started to get mad and pushed him back. Then I started to walk away and he grabbed me on my arm again. After much yelling and shouting he called the cops. By this time we were both steaming mad. I called my haekwon director.
After about 5 minutes two(!) police-cars arrived lights flashing and sirens wailing! The cops took my foreigner ID number & passport no. Atabout the same time my haekwon director arrived and told me that he would handle everything and told me to get out of it....which I gladly did.
Anyway I went back to my haekwon and began my classes. When the director arrived back he told not worry about anything.
On reflection though I wonder if I did the right thing here. Cant help but think I should have at least offered to pay half. Thing is though I've had so many bad experiences with Korean taxi drivers (I've been in Korea a while but dont have a car or anything so I frequently use taxis), that my natural reaction when I have any kind of altercation with them is not to give an inch. I dunno....wot u think??

Oh my goodness!
You live in Yongin, don't you? Or maybe it's just a weird coincidence...
One of my students told me this story-- she said "I saw a fight between a foreigner and a taxi driver today," and then described your tale. She was watching and she said it wasn't your fault. She wanted to help but her English is very limited. It's up to the taxi driver's car insurance, not you (according to her and the policeman.) |

If the window was defective, it shouldn't be his responsibility to pay for it. Anyways, my guess is that the driver wanted 100,000 won had he'd later collect on his insurance as well. Calling your director is the right thing to do.
But I don't think he overreacted. if the taxi driver grabbed him, he started the physicality. He deserved such a response.

You were right not to pay - he should either: a.call his insurance company and let them deal with it, or b. find out how much it would cost first before demanding any money from you.
You shouldn't really have lost your cool... |
