In The Mouth of Madness
Prince of Darkness
The Omen
Masque of the Red Death

Rent them all- watch them all, in one sitting, ALONE AND WITH THE LIGHTS OUT! Laughing

I dare you.

I found it to have really good suspense for half of it, but lost it when they turned up at the Army Barracks, completely ruined the film.

And the new one, downloaded and watched half, can't be arsed to watch the second half, awful.

Alien and 28 Days Later are definitely two of the best. Try Wes Craven's They. It's much better than his other work.

The Thing ... crosses that boundary of horror/sci fi (like Alien, but a good creep/scare/gore fest nonetheless.

I'll second that. That movie gave me nightmares for a month when I was a kid.

Maybe, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre or the Exorcist.
There have been countless fun cult status films in this genre as well that many posters here have already mentioned.
