The numbers are misleading and self serving.
The majority of the foreign visitors to korea are teachers and the folks connected with the U.S. Military
Also, whenever one leaves korea on a visa run and returns, it is counted again as a visit. Double billing. It makes the numbers look great and the powers to be in korea use it to attract more foreigners. |

| Thailand and Australia are pretty far away, so your average American isn't going to spend a leisurely weekend there. Plus, the US is big enough that there are tons of domestic travel options that most will never see in their lifetime. |

I don't really care, but isn't Korea pretty far away too?
I find it hard to believe more Americans would choose Korea over Thailand, but maybe it's visiting relatives here. |

I thougt we established that a lot of the visitors to Korea were Korean-Americans visiting family or people on business.
Oh well, I'm sure the world will right itself in no time. |

SO TRUE.
Plus, in Korea, you meet Americans all over the place. Mostly ESL teachers, businessman, military contracters, military and their family as well, etc.
Go to Thailand, and the only Americans I ever meet there are generally ESL teachers from Korea! I almost never meet Americans down there. You'll also have some young American backpackers from university as well.
The mass majority of Americans just wouldn't consider Thailand. Mexico or the Carribbean on short vacations. Americans just get very little vacation time for one. |
