|

I thought this was interesting when researching on how to do a temple stay coming as a single individual and found the 4 temples that take single reservations.
I found this American who came over in 1984 intending to stay only 6 months, but stayed and become a Buddhist monk who is fluent in Korean. I didn't think it was possible to integrate into Korean culture like this, but it is for those willing to adapt such as in learning the language to fluency and carrying the same values.
This proves that it's not true that all foreigners are outsiders, but it does require fluent Korean literacy.

but its alittle different than interacting with korean society ...
he is a monk! buddhism is based on purity they share a common bond
and prejudice is not one of them..
I doubt that same guy would have been here if he was not a buddhist |

Thinking that this monk is integrated in Korean society is very deceptive -- international Zen centers are run very differently than traditional Korean orders, where there are almost no foreigners.
Within many centers, there are conflicts between Koreans and foreigners based on -- you guessed it -- cultural/racial issues.
I know this because I'm an active Buddhist here in Korea... |

Have you noticed that people who get really into Buddhism and stay in temples and spend their whole lives dressing up as monks and trying to act peaceful and serene usually have no personality to begin with? This is how they integrate into other societies - they are a tabula rasa, an empty vessel, a fucking nobody from the off. |

I think you've mistaken my rhetoric thrust. I'm saying that they're losers; that they use Buddhism in lieu of a personality. |

We live next door to a Buddhist Church place. It's all colored up with dragons and things and it has the slanted roof etc. I was quite surprised because there is a family living there and the woman smacked around her child one morning, I take it the girl is her own. I have no regard for Buddhism or any of the other isms.
Take everyone for who they really are. |

Thank you. I always strive to be number one.
I remember when I was visiting the Tibetan Government-in-exile in Dharmssala a few years ago (where the Dalai Lama lives) and I met a fat, charmless American girl who was dressed up like a monk and who seemed to be seeking some sort of deep spiritual knowledge and self-awareness whilst she was off school for the summer. I have never seen anyone so blithely and offensively patronise an entire religious culture. That's the sort of person I think of when I think of converts to Buddhism. It's a good job the monks were pacifists - if it had been my culture she'd been reducing to a mockery, I'd have kicked her right in the front-bottom. |
