I've spent the last week getting back into my 90's CDs. Some pretty good music there. Who do you think was the best, mainstream rock band of the 90's?

Gotta be Pearl Jam for me. They were awesome and you can definitely here Eddie's influence in a lot of "pop rock" music now.

Honorable mention to Chili Peppers, U2, and R.E.M.

Nirvana and Radiohead can suck my left testy for thinking so highly of themselves. (and for making crap music). Yes, I know this line of thinking is bound to be unpopular here on Dave's, but I really hate these two bands.

Most of these bands were labeled "Alternative" back in the day, but I think it's pretty obvious they were actually quite mainstream.

Hi - I think PJ died after their first record while RHCP kept getting hits. I voted RHCP. I liked Nirvana/Foo Fighters/Sunny Day Real Estate because of lack of radio airplay on the more pop-y stations plus I could listen to whole CD's by all bands.

If you're including 90s one hit wonders, why not add Baha Men, Lou Bega, The Rembrandts, Los Del Rio, and Afroman to the list?

Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Nine Inch Nails have all made the trip from the 1990's to my MP3 player.

As a Canadian teenager growing up in the 90s, The Tragically Hip (mainstream for us anyway!).

In the word of Alejandro Jodorowsky, "If you are great, El Topo is a great picture. If you are limited, El Topo is limited." That's how I feel about Radiohead. Some people just prefer bands like Korn or Limp Bizkit, some people are moronic plebians.

As for your list, it's pretty much an early nineties list. That was a time when those bands where labeled alternative, as in alternative to the mainstream, and it still meant something. So, I suppose I call shenanigans on you. Those only slightly, as they were played on the radio and MTv they were pretty much mainstreamed, like it or not.

The best band of the nineties, mainstream or not, The Pixies.

I'd have to say my favourite mainstream band from the '90s who I still like would have to be Sloan. I brought the CD One Chord to Another on my first trip to Korea in 1996 and for years whenever I listened to it it reminded me of being in Korea. They're probably a little more obscure than Tragically Hip but they're mainstream where I'm from.

I saw them play some club dates in the early 90s

I can't imagine admiting to liking U-2.

I would sub Stone Temple Pilots for NIN and those would be my faves.

Ah, you're one of those "special" people who fancies themselves "deep", "artisitc" and "rebellious" for going against the masses and not liking great music like U2.

As for other responses.... yes, my list could have been better. Definitely should have had STP and I was thinking Soundgarden, but seems to me like they never really hit the "mainstream" quite as hard as all the other bands.
