South Korean Workers Clash With Police in Rally Over Free Trade Deal With United States

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- Tens of thousands of South Korean farmers and workers clashed with riot police Sunday at a massive rally against a free trade agreement with the United States.
Some protesters fought with riot police wearing helmets and shields, attacking them with the sticks, throwing stones and trying to turn over police buses set up to block the protest site in central Seoul. Police fired water cannons at the protesters and sprayed fire extinguishers.

The protesters occupied a 16-lane road and chanted slogans against the free trade deal. Police said they arrested some 100 protesters and that more than 10 riot police were hurt. Organizers said some 50 demonstrators were hurt -- mostly suffering head injuries.

I've been here 4 years. I've seen a lot of protests but I've never seen on turn violent. I saw all the cops and protesters out Sunday around the downtown. Man, missed the actual attacks.

The korean police should open fire on these people. bring in the army and open up with some rubber bullets. Arrest people and imprison them.

It isn't. But they have a cultural tendency towards romanticizing an agrarian, pre-colonial past that manifests itself in granting far too much respect and cash to rice farmers in the country. Also, these farmers are able to use feelings from years of being invaded to their advantage. Food security is a big concept in Korea.

Unrelated, KL was under similar riot-induced gridlock yesterday.

They take their money, business, and market place competition very seriously in Korea. This is what people primarily think about and focus on much of the time everyday. It's amazing how much more materialistic Korea is over America when I thought Americans were the most materialistic minded people.

Korea has every reason to fear international import trade, because Korean prices to too high to compete in the global economy. They must learn how to accept lower profit margins instead of over pricing goods. They do sell Korean goods outside of Korea for lower prices than in Korea to be able to compete with exports in the global economy.
