Alberta has a higher crime rate than Ontario.

Higher than Toronto even?

I never remember locking my doors in Canada when I was back home. When I was away, yes, but I also lived in a nice safe suburban neighborhood.

We didn't lock our doors either. Well, actually we locked our front door, but all you had to do was walk about 20 feet to your left and walk in another door that was never locked. We have lived in the same house from 1983 until now, and I have never even had a key to it, and I have never needed one to get in. Even when we went on vacation, we would lock the doors, but more than likely some of the windows would have been unlocked.

I'm from BC, always locked the door, the car, windows, etc.
Here, I do the same.
Hubby often likes to have our door and windows open in the apt. On the 17th floor we get a nice breeze going through. As long as he is home, fine, but I have had to drill him that when I am in bed, pregnant and sick, he MUST close and lock the door behind him if he leaves! I HATE waking up after he is gone, hobbling out and the door is WIDE open! At least we have a secure building, no one can get into our elevators without dialing us up on the Vidphone. No missionaries here, but still, it drives me batty!
My first apt in Korea I had the drunken next door neighbour try to get in on a few nights, usually when wifey locked him out. Creepy as hell to wake up at 3am, single female alone in the apartmen, door knob jiggling, someone pushing against the door and drunkenly begging his honey to let him in!

Slightly related story.

A few years ago, I was living in a villa and was about midway through a shower when somone tried opening my door (which is always, always locked in this country.)

Anyway, after a few moments of jiggling the door, the person starts knocking really really loudly on the door. I continued my shower, assuming the person would eventually get tired of pounding on the door and leave. The person then escalates from knocking to pounding, then to shouting on the door. I imagine it's been about a good five minutes now, and I've been getting steadily angrier the whole time, and finally, since I was pretty much all rinsed off at that point I burst out of the shower, wrapped a towel around my waist and threw the door open, shouting "WHAT THE F*CK DO YOU WANT?"

So, the idiot ajuma (who actually happened to be the landlord) is suddenly struck by three things 1) OH! He was taking a shower! So THAT'S why he didn't open the door 2) Jesus Christ, this crazy foreigner is going to kill me and 3)a gigantic swinging wang (just kidding, it was actually more of a graze than a full on strike.)

Apparently, she wanted to get a reading on my water meter outside my door, but couldn't since the water was running, because I was taking a shower, which, apparently, is just entirely to f*cking complicated to figure out on one's own.

I've had similar experiences over the past 3 years, but am personally much more bothered by the kcufing arseholes who feel the need to rattle the stall door when I'm taking a dump.

(Pushes on door) "Hmm... door no open, maybe knock good idea."

(Knock knock) "Hmm... nobody open door, maybe knock again good idea"

(KNOCK KNOCK.....*pause*...... KNOCK KNOCK from other side) "Hmm... sombody knock from inside, maybe rattle door good idea."

(Pushes on door.... again.)

(Heard from inside) "Go to the next kcufing stall you simple twat!!"

(In best monkey voice) "Uh! Uh! Herro!" Confused

Wow, I gotta say this has never happened to me. I've never had anyone try the doorknob- always knock or ring and wait.

Guess I'm lucky.

I've learned long ago to deadbolt the door, even when I'm at home. Still, it doesn't stop people from banging on your door in impatient frustration when you don't answer the doorbell .02 seconds after it has finished ringing.

The first thing that I do when I move into a place here in Korea is to disconnect the wiring of the doorbell. Mine is not a secure building anyway, and there is no camera, so what is the point of that LOUD door bell anyway?

So I was lying in bed today around 11, trying futilely to fall back asleep, when a sudden knock comes to my door. I'm still very sore from a traffic accident so I can't just hop up--it takes me a moment, like an old man. Before I could even get up, the door handle was already being shaken and the guy at the door was trying to enter. WTF. I yelled out, "nuguya!" He responded he's here with my electricity bill. Eh.. real urgent.

I yelled at him to wait while I put on some pants. He starts screaming at me through the door about not paying last month's bill. I opened the door and immediately started yelling at him for trying to come into my home. Soon as he saw my crazy waeg face he changed his tune to that idiotic laughing and "cheosonghamnida" routine. Yeah, he didn't seem so cheosong a second before as he tried to enter my home illegally.

I cannot understand this phenomenon of people here just barging into your home if you don't come to the door right away. I'm telling you, this guy wasn't just trying the lock, he was squeezing the handle and shaking the door, as if the lock were threadbare and he could break through it like Superman. My landlord does the exact same thing. Even a post office delivery guy tried to barge into my home one time. I just don't get it.

Korean people must not be bothered by a random guy allowing himself into their homes. And they must not lock their doors too much, because these guys usually persist even when they see the door is locked, as if they don't understand the concept of a lock. Jesus H.

Yep, I've experienced it way too many times as well!

One of my more annoying ones is when I'm in the shower - which I know you can hear from the door. It's like 'oh the shower is on, so he's obviously home', I'll just keep knocking harder so he can hear it over the running water!

--

But yeah, almost ALL Koreans ALWAYS try the door handle and just keep jiggling it like there is something wrong with it for not opening.

When I moved into my recent apartment, the movers had my front door open. One guy came in off the street to have a look around. No one seemed to respond or acknowledge this whatsoever, so I assumed he must know the movers or owners or something. Then after about five minutes of watching the movers move stuff in, he just left just as quickly as he came in.
