can be measured by the way its animals are treated. Mahatma Gandhi
If this is a thread that has been posted before, I apologize. Is anyone else completely appalled by the way animals are treated in this country? With one notable exception, the lovely woman who operates the Daejeon dog shelter (which will be closed within three months), I have seen nothing but negligence towards animals in all situations here. Even those with good intentions towards their pets unthinkingly mistreat them. Just a little bit of venting, but I am interested to hear what other people think of the situation here. |

You gotta remember Gandhi came from a country that lets cows just walk around and have free reign. This is also a man who said native South Africans were only one degree separated from animals. So I'm not sure he had the best grip on what an animal is and how they should be treated.
That being said, yeah Koreans seem to treat animals roughly, with some exceptions. You can also check out some insane videos of animal treatment in China online if you look. |

Joon in Itaewon (and her network of volunteers and vets) is a hero to the cat and cat-lover community. |

Excellent points Qinella, regarding Gandhi. I'm just generally grossed out by the mistreatment of animals I witness on an almost daily basis here. That being said, I won't be looking for any horrifying vid of animal cruelty online, perfectly aware that it exists. Hats off to Joon as well, Fronk. |

Haha, this board does appear to be a flame fest at the best of times and an effigy burning at the worst of times. However, it is tough to resist crapping on self righteous individuals who post mainly to provoke reactions. That being said, I know I can count myself among those that perpetrate said postings, mostly out of boredom. |

probably only consistent with the way many people are treated here. I work next to a 개고기 판매점 and the dogs - with an insanely large gut I might add- are kept in cages and howl like wolves. i might hasten to add that every monday morning you can see the blood coming off the hooks and thats no bs either.

Moon bears are cute. Dogs are cute. Cats are cute. Dolphins are cute. The Japanese, the Chinese, the Koreans torture cute animals to death, deliberately. Anyone who tries subsequently to argue the West is just as bad in its cruelty to animals should be euthanized. |

not that i mean to start an argument or anything but Gandhi did not say that about native south africans (that is the term you used) he said that of the native south african prisoners during the time he spent in prison. Many people the world over describe prisoners as animals.
on a different note hope you are feeling better.

Yeah fair enough. Maybe the quote is taken out of context.

Addressing Stevieg's assertion that Gandhi only referred to South African prisoners as animals, you should check out this site: www.cwo.com/~lucumi/gandhi.html. The author of this site could be a wacko, but he does offer up some insights (?) into the man himself: "Nothing could be further from the truth that Gandhi fought against Apartheid, which many propagandists in later years wanted people to believe. He was all in favor of continuation of white domination and the oppression of blacks in South Africa". Something to consider anyway. |

there are theories and counter theories behind this, its been done to death.
At the onset of the Boer war or south african war (whatever you refer to is as), Gandhi organised a volunteer ambulance corps of 300 free Indians called the Indian Ambulance Corps, and it was one of the few medical units to serve wounded black South Africans during the Boer war at all. He was also a major catalyst for Indians to join the Boer war in the first place at all and has been subsequently recognised for this by many prominent scholars, historians, my SA mate Johnathan in south london and daves esl posters etc etc lol.
the debate will go on nonetheless im sure. |

More racist trolling from this poster. When will it ever end? |

In the west there are too many people who love their dogs more than their fellow man. Now that's pretty sick, imo.
Go to the parks and you'll see huge dogs roaming around as if the parks were made for them and their selfish and vain owners. This whole fetish about pet ownership is sickening beyond description.
Westerners spend more on their pets than they do on foreign aid. People who care more about their pets than about human life have no moral ground to "vent" about anything, imho. |
