Here's a similar thread I've started in response to this one:
Funny things blacks believe in
(probably won't exist, though) |

Oh yay, another racist Korea-bashing thread. How about starting a similar thread called "Funny things Canadians believe in" or "Funny things blacks believe in" ? Nevermind--I will in the Off-Topic forum. Let's see how long it takes to get pulled while this thread will go on for pages and pages.
You should all be ashamed of yourselves for even contributing to this nonsense. |
I agree with this.
How is any of this different than the stupid belief Canadians and Americans ahve that you shouldn't go swimming less than one hour after eating or that you should drink 8 glasses of water a day? Really... come on guys. |

Last week I had a date with a Korean lady - and we decided each to bring a friend..
She brought a male-Kyopo friend - who has lived in the USA all his life - but only returned to Korea 2 months ago...
I was hoping for a pleasant experience over a few drinks - instead the "male-Kyopo" friend argued for almost 2 hours about the above things I just posted - and no matter how much I tried to get out of the argument - or change the topic - he kept going on and on and on about how it is true - and that all foreigners are still half-monkeys...
He has only been in Korea for 2 months - but he has already FORSAKEN and DISOWNED his american upbringing and his american son - and TOTALLY believes the above things with all his heart...
I was amazed that it doesn't take them long (2months) - to reject the US after living their all his life - and completely embrace everything Korea believes in...

I thought this thread was about what Koreans believed, not one disgruntled kyopo? Did your date support his views. I know a few Koreans who would have told him to shut his stupid fookin' head. |

I'm totally up for a thread on funny things Canadians believe. It's not racist-- it's just noticing what makes our cultures different. Nobody's saying Western thought is perfect. However, an outside perspective does sometimes make some commonly-held beliefs seem silly. I think a closed culture like Korea is particularly susceptible to this kind of thing, as Koreans are very loyal to "uri nara" (and thus not so interested in outside ideas) and not encouraged to question their elders, thus some unfounded beliefs linger. |

my examples were all taken from my korean textbook, hardly racist.
It would be different if i said:
Koreans are kind
Korea has 4 season
Korean food spicy and healthy and very delicious
Tomatos are vegetables
Park Ji Sung very good socca player
etc etc etc

Korea is the only country on this planet that has 4 seasons.
Koreans have bigger brains than any other country.
Koreans have bigger heads than any other country.
(The above 3 taught in Daejeon Middle Schools.)
Only Koreans experience "Han". (Think I was told this a long time ago.)
A girl is not a woman until she bears a son into the world. Before that time she is just a "selfish girl". (I once heard a stupid ajoshi tell this to a very kind Catholic nun.)
Korea celebrated "Boy's Day" until 1975, when it was changed to Children's Day. (Preference for boys.) |

This is a ridiculous statement. Everything I have posted has come from a Korean. The thread title wasn't "ridiculous things Koreans believe in." It is supposed to be humorous. Like I said, I am sure some of them are true, but just different from what I am used to. I am *not* Korea bashing. Bash my country as much as you want, most of it is probably true. |

Except for Thai food, Indian, Mexican, garlicky Greek, and TexMex. They are too spicy.

People believe this back home too. I know because I am a victim of such belief. Born a lefty, then later fucked up in my handedness by an aunt over one summer vacation, and now am quasi-ambidextrous.
Plenty of people in my father's generation were "converted" as well. |

A lot of Koreans believe that Korean is a RACE with genetic "pure blood" significance.
The absurdity of this when one sees Mongolian, Manchurian, Japanese, Han Chinese, even South Pacific islander characteristics in their faces is lost on them.
DNA studies should help debunk such thoughts if pursued. |

It's true, my wife told me this one, and the fan death one. I have tried to put foward my opinion, but hey, sometimes you have to accept different ideas even if they MAKE NO SENSE . |

I think it's funny when I run into a rude Korean who won't respond to a greeting. (The b!tch behind the electronics counter at Homever, the b!tch at the bowling alley, the b!tch at the travel agency, etc.)
I'll mention it to some of my Korean friends, and they'll say, "Oh, well they are just too afraid or they're too worried about their English skills." |

It's different. Some people just note these things, or keep them in the back of their mind, or whatever. Other people actually put these things into practice.
Maybe I know of the belief that we shouldn't walk under a ladder. But I occasionally do. But ask a Korean to sleep with the fan on......

I was not Korean-bashing at all...
when I wrote this -
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
All foreign English teachers are pedo's, drug addicts and have fake degrees.
Japan and the USA are the most evil countries on the planet.
Koreans all have pure blood.
Koreans have the HIGHEST IQ in the world.
Koreans are the MOST evolved people in the world, because of their hairless, short bodies with small noses, eyes and small ears. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last week I had a date with a Korean lady - and we decided each to bring a friend..

Hubby grew up in Texas, and has not abandoned his American beliefs and sensibilities, Thank God! That means after I give birth I CAN shower and I DON'T have to eat seaweed soup 5 times a day in rooms with the temperature set to over 30 degrees! Yeah!
I've encountered some interesting beliefs being pregnant.
1. My doctor believes I am a high risk pregnancy because I am white. In Western culture we are advised to take supplements of Folic Acid to prevent neural tube defects. In Korea they don't, so even though I am taking them she is terrified our baby will have a problem.
2.They believe certain dreams will tell if you are having a male or female.
3.That the baby will want to eat what the father likes so my cravings will all be for my husbands favorite foods.
4.If I don't eat walnuts everyday, my child will have a small brain.(Walnuts do contain Omega 3 fatty acids, in small amounts, but one students mother spent 50,000won on a bag of walnuts for me!! It was a small bag, the walnuts were shelled but intact, kinda like how the squirrels do in Charlie and the Chocolate factory.)
Now, I'm not sure if these are solely Korean, but I found them interesting.
As for the ambi-dextrous thing, my hubby was left handed. Grandma drilled him till he became right handed, but now he can use chopsticks, write, everything with both hands. Pretty cool! |
