ID cards, that perennial solution in search of a problem.

Ha. Too true.

Actually, we kind of need it because there are so many people who commit welfare and medicare fraud. I used to work for the government and I caught so many people collecting far more welfare or pension than they should because they had several social insurance numbers.

Of the many reasons to oppose the welfare state, in my mind this is the most powerful. The road to serfdom is paved with good intentions.

Its a sad state of affairs when the government doesnt know who is in this country. Some of the prices being quoted for the card (and replacement cards should they be lost) are grossly expensive and it seems to tie in nicely with the Olympics bid. Why is it that in the UK whenever the government cocks up the public is left to pick up the bill?

That said, I hadnt considered the points above about it being used to reduce benefit fraud so perhaps it may have some advantages after all.

Well, to answer "what next" I would say 10 police cameras on every block in London to monitor for "anti-social" behavior, but that could never happen.
