The first thing that I do when I move into a place here in Korea is to disconnect the wiring of the doorbell. Mine is not a secure building anyway, and there is no camera, so what is the point of that LOUD door bell anyway?

I did that in my apartment in Seoul. DAMN it was loud for a smallish 12pyung place. Landlady still hasn't said anything about the disconnection 8 years later.

In my Daejeon apartment, though, I have that stupid bird-twittering bell for the door and something just as stupid for the intercom. Both are low enough that they don't bother me, but still I'm tempted to get a new video intercom so I don't have to march all the way across the apartment just to look throught the peephole and ignore them.

You wouldn't happen to be a co-worker of Ya-ta Boy's by any chance would you? Just thought I'd ask...

No. Why?

This has saved me time, money and headaches. And don't just limit yourself to the living room. Or 'humanly possible'.

Some pizza delivery drivers don't even knock, they just open the door.

After all, they are bringing you something you just ordered and want quickly (must be their thinking).

I don't mind that so much since it is expected.

I think that's why a lot of younger married Koreans decide to live in secure high rises that take a password to go in the building, a key card to use the elevator, and another code + key to open the apartment door, which, by the way has a CCTV camera intercom for residents to ask who's at the door when someone rings the doorbell.

Yeah, often if I'm expecting something (delivery guys sometimes call ahead), I'll actually leave the door open.

But if I'm not expecting anyone, that door gets opened with a fury - I don't like uninvited guests.

I hate this. I've had a few close calls.

1. In Jeonju, where I spent one month at a camp, the maintenance guy barged into my apartment (I was staying in a one-room) a couple of times. The first time it happened, it was a late Saturday morning. I was still in bed and, in fact, had just had a Self-Pleasure Event. Five minutes earlier and he'd have seen a lot more of me than he wanted to see.

2. Here in Dumpjeom, the utility guys from my university almost barged in while I was sitting on the toilet. Since I live alone, I don't bother to shut the bathroom door while I'm in there. They pounded on the door and tried unlocking it. I shouted but probably not loud enough. Fortunately I'd finished taking care of business. A few more seconds and... I could have shut the bathroom door in time, but it's the principle of the thing. How do you ask, in Korean, if Korean people digest corn better than white people do?

Yeah no kidding. With my luck, next thing you know someone's gonna careen into me with their car and keep on driving.

And it'll happen when you're in your apartment!

한국사람들은 백인들 보다 옥수수를 잘 소화하니? That's my best guess.. why did you want to know that?

Funny stories.

So Michael Moore was right!

We keep our doors locked in Alberta. Maybe it's only Ontarians who are that dumb.

Hey be nice! Shocked I am from Saskatchewan AND Ontario and we all lock our doors.

Been here 6 years and never had a problem like this myself. Though I suspect that someone may have been into the first place I stayed in while my roommate and I were out. She was accusing me of going through her stuff. She was 20 years my senior and not exactly hot. Confused Not good for workplace relations.

We have the main external door and an internal doorway. I was listening through my headphones loud as I do and had that strange feeling, looked around and there was a poor old woman standing at the doorway. I think she was there for a while calling out for my attention. She wanted cardboard. Poor old dear, 'Take the beer bottles,' I said, and helped her carry them down the stairs.
Can't understand it though, why people let themselves in. Damndest cultural habit I've ever known.

If some goon or perv off the street comes up and let's himself in, he'll get more than one of those Korean style slaps about the head.

Hey, any stories about hot chicks who purposely let themselves in to your pad? That would be okay.
