hey bros,

i'm sure i'm gonna get a lot of BS about being metro and all that, but i'm white as copy paper right now and i want some color on my skin before i head to the beaches of SE asia. i tried to look up some info on here about places to go, but all i see mentioned are nail salons and beauty parlors, probably not the kinds of places that'll accept waegookin studs like myself. are there any good places in seoul for guys?

A real, natural tan - very nice. A fake tan - unpleasant and potentially dangerous.

In countries such as Canada, the US, and Australia, MEN get tans by working outside all day herding cows, repairing a roof, operating a jackhammer all day, doing military drills, or digging holes and trenches. In Korea, the outdoor workers cover themselves extensively to avoid tanning. It's going to be hard to get a tan unless you decide to do manual labor. Anything else would make you a LADY.

men in those countries also get wicked farmers tans and look like total morons at the beach, which i know from experience. anyone who operates a jackhammer all day is likely required by law to wear jeans, a t-shirt, and boots. so i guess they have a pretty sweet neck and forearm tan goin for em, but that's about it.

being out in the sun in the tropics with some melanin already in place - comfortable and pleasant. being out in the sun in the tropics with pasty wintertime skin - unpleasant and potentially dangerous.

Matt,

There's an earlier thread from a month or two ago that suggests a salon above the Burger King in Itaewon and also a salon behind the Hamilton Hotel across the street from the aforementioned BK. There's no need to be a Brokeback Mountain cowboy or Village Person to get a tan. Just go in one of the salons and talk to one of the chicks. Maybe they'll even throw in a jerkjob.

I imagine you were taken aback by your boyfriend's tan lines!

I suppose if you were out spear fishing in the ocean for survival or as a "cultural experience" you could get a suntan with your shirt off.

???????

You are travelling to one of the HOTTEST locales on Earth! THE SUN IS FREE THERE! Why not get a friggin' tan by sitting on the beach? It should take you about 20 minutes.

Because 20 minutes in the Philippine sun without a base tan will potentially ruin your vacation. Not all of us like going from pasty white to lobster red on the first day and spending the rest of our time there indoors.

I'm with the OP on this one. Getting a reasonable base tan from booths is a good idea before traveling to a tropical destination.

Unfortunately, no one has bothered to tell Koreans that you have to change the bulbs on tanning beds frequently in order to keep them effective.

Also, many of the beauty/skin/well being shops (outside of Itaewon, at least) were SHOCKED when I requested a tan outside of the summer season. Laughing

Yeah they are, so long as you don't overdo it.
