I have a friend from school who is a (white) south african. Back in the day when we all lived in the same area it would be completely fine to turn up at his house totally unannounced. If he wasnt in we could just use his computer and make some food.
He claimed that this sort of hospitality was just the way things were done in south africa and encouraged us to come round to the point where we just took advantage.
So unless he was lying there are a lot of nice south africans. They could just be like canadians though and pretend to be really nice...faking like they like people the whole time when they actually don't give a.... |

its not. 4 million is a small % of South Africa's population. It was approaching double that before, but a lot left within the past 10 years after blacks got into power. Of those that officially remain, a surprising number live semi-permanently or work outside the country. South Africa has the highest % of citizens living outside its borders of any nation.
Or, at least it did, until Mugabe turned up the heat in Zimbabwe. Now there are more black zimbabweans living as refugees in london than there were whites living in Rhodesia 20 years earlier. South Africa is going down the same road. Thousands of white farmers are killed in S.Africa every year.
If you come back in another 15 years and say "there are no white people in Africa", you may probably, finally, be correct. |

Wouldn't it be more correct to write 'when apartheid was abolished a lot of white people left'
Also I think Incognito would be better served to put his hands up abouthi lack o knowledge on the subject, stop coming out with excuses about his education and where he lives, wipe his mouth and move on! |

I'd love to stop, but everytime I look at this thread I see another "incognito's an idiot" response, and I'm not one to sit around and take that nonsense. Even if it is on Dave's. |

Scary thing though is that its fairly common for americans not to know white people can be found in Africa.
In his defense I must say i was shocked to see a white person representing Trinidad at the olympics once. I heard there are white Jamaicans too- is that true?
* On a related note I see bolivia has undergone a programme to rid itself of white people. Apparently it has slumped to being the poorest South American nation as a result, (so I hear). |

I should post the Youtube video called "Americans are not stupid" something something. Its a guy with a camera walking around asking Americans basic geography questions, and its just astonishing. Of course it could be rigged (bad sample), but the fact that they could find that many people in seemingly one afternoon is insane.
They had a big, empty, map of the world and were asking Americans to point to A, B and C countries. People pointed to Australia when asked to point to France (they put a little plastic Eiffel Tower on it)... someone thought South Korea was Australia, and remarked "Gee, South Korea is a lot bigger than North Korea" (wtf?!)
Anyway, you can fault the education system in Canada forever but I remember having to have a world map memorized by Grade 11. Since I teach American social studies textbooks at my hagwon, I can tell you first hand that the only thing they seem to teach is America and nothing else. Falsely, at that ("this is our president. He is our leader, this is our great president making a decision... etc etc") |

There is a germantown in Jamacia that has been populated with ethnic germans since the 19th century and still has german descendants living there, there aren't many white Jamacians left but there are some.
The most famous white Jamacian was the beauty queen Cindy Brakespeare who was miss world in 1975 (I think) she married Bob Marley (who also had a white father).
There are big European minorities in Barbados and Bermuda (which isn't strictly the carribean but still...) |

Just say 'yeah right' and move on. Folk are just going to wind you up the more you try to justify your lack of knowledge on Africa (especially if there are South Africans lurking about! ) |

| Guys, guys, I think you gotten off the point. The original question was whether anyone has ever met a "nice" South African??!! Personally, I find that offensive, not the fact that people don't know that nearly one tenth of South Africans are white. Seriously, who have you been talking to? We're good people, yeah we get a bit fanatical about Rugby, but were passionate - can you blame us? |

Actually there are still about 6 million white south africans in south africa.....and 1 .0 million elsewhere ...for the last 4 years there are more europeans (mostly germans and brits) moving to live in south africa than white people leaving...the numbers are therefore growing ...
The videoclip is pretty much loved and laughed at by most south africans...we recognise a certain stereotype in there....like that crazy uncle everyone has....for any of us to get offended by the video would mean it was based in a general true depiction , which of course is ridiculous... |

where do you people pull this nonsense out of ? Why do south african ALWAYS have to exagerate statistics ? You the type who can't handle the fact that the country is thriving under a black government aren't you ?
At the grossest estimate done by the U.N about 365 white south africans are murdered every year ...but this has been in decline steadily since 2001. This is a lot ...but it's not 1000's .....
England has the most south african "expats" at about 150 000 . 95% of those return to live in south africa after there "gap" years .
Then you say South Africa is going down the same road as zimbabwe.....whilst the reality is our country has never EVER thrived as much economically...we've had 6% real growth for the last 3-4 years....the government is sitting on huge surplasses ....there were 27 000 new rand millionaires last year alone....but people like you say things like "the economy is going to hell"....just shut up ..you don't know what you are talking about...
you are probably on of those who says the aids rate is like 1 in 5 people.........which means 2 times more people have hiv than people have herpes....nice logic ,idiot !!!
You are free to criticise your country and the government...just try and do it with actual facts instead of spitting nonsense you heard in the bar with yuor white racist friends who cant stand the thought of the country actually thriving...

Why the hell not? One of my best friends in uni was from South Africa. As sweet and non-judmental a girl as anyone I'd met. She and her family (white) immigrated to Canada before Apartheid was lifted because they hated the politics behind it. Funny, though, the parents ended up only perpetuating some of the same ugly politics in Canada when their daughter started dating a non-white guy (Pakistani). She ended up running off with the guy and got married. Her parents still believe she was taken by a "black" man against her will.  |

This is probably because I'm not trying to stay neck and neck in the pseudo-witty banter olympics like you are. I just probe for information, sometimes I play around a little bit and say random crap, but do I say more random/stupid crap than the average user on this forum?
I doubt it.
...and I manage to use this place less than twenty minutes a day. Gasp. |
