I don't see why I have to prove that a vote for Lee means a return to dictatorship. We probably both agree that Lee would run the country similar to how Park ran it, so does it matter what I call it and what you call it? You call Park a president, not a dictator, which he was. Well, he was both.

As for one way that Lee will return to the days of dictatorship, here's an article about how he wanted to create a blacklist to forbid independent bands from playing music.

I'm not impressed with the 'argument' about who Park's father was. I don't consider that a legitimate point. Guilt by association is not persuasive, in my book.

I think what she did was just guarantee her nomination in 5 or 10 years, whenever the job opens up again.

I'll bet next week when the new polls come out, Lee Hoi-Chang will show some slippage.

Sorry man, but being conservative/reactionary about lewd performances does not equate to locking up political prisoners.

I actually think that Lee could be a unifier. He's been known to compromise to achieve a task.

Yes, Lee would run the country in a similar way as Park in the sense that you would see a much more pro-business government. Would Lee roll back democracy? Seriously, who are you listening to? Its a ludicrous statement to even suggest, much less make. As far as the blacklist goes, I was all for it. Its not anti democratic to control lewd, obscene behavior.

I would go LMB all the way. Even though he's super corrupt. But here, who isn't? At least you know what you're getting.

Korea has got to be at least 20 years away from being able to accept a woman president. They still scold women for smoking on the street, in their little confuscianist minds.

CDY is a piece of crap. Another Noh. If they want 5 more years of an imbecile running the country, vote for Chung. Go Geon is a good man from all accounts, but he is a follower, not a leader. He may be able to win. He has little to no scandals on his record.

Lee Hoi Chang is a crusty old man, past his prime. They should have elected him 5 years ago and now he wouldn't be in the running.

Who gets to decide what's lewd and/or obscene?

Hopefully someone.

Freedom of Speech is not absolute.

Anyone who thinks it is, is fooling themselves (and this has been gone over numerous times on this forum)

I'm the first person to say freedom of speech is not absolute. But if you want lewdness and obscenity, go to one of the many hip-hop clubs that are thoroughly welcomed by Korean society, or better yet go to those dance competitions where the winners are chosen based on how much clothes they take off. The lewdest Korean independent bands are puritanical compared to that. This is just about wanting to control a potentially threatening element where people are free to be creative and think for themselves, a very rare thing on this peninsula that authoritarian leaders like Park and Lee are afraid of.

Park Junghee really screwed Korean pop culture when he started indiscriminately locking up musicians and artists, and if you think Korean pop culture and music sucks now you won't want to see that happen again.

I take it you don't remember WHY this became an issue right?

if I recall, was there not nudity involved in a public performance?

I believe that is sparked the quotes from LMB.

Insightful. My husband thinks the same - that she is letting it go now for a better and bigger future.

Nudity in a public performance?! Oh, heaven forfend!!

Yeah, what Korea really needs is a fucking evangelical Christian deciding what Koreans are allowed to see...

Yes, I was invited to be on stage at that show. It was blown out of proportion and all Hongdae bands were unfairly demonised for it. And yes, the two guys who got naked are still puritans compared to what goes on in hip-hop clubs and half the other clubs in Korea. Is it really worth having the government start blacklists of musicians who are not allowed to play just because of that single incident? Do you really think it would've just been limited to the only two guys who got naked?

I can tell you there are plenty of bands out there with crude lyrics and profane language, as well as political songs that any government would disagree with, and there's even one band that has a song about Lee Myungbag. Do they deserve to be banned too? I know Jinju would want them locked in prison for singing anti-government songs but what about the sane people on here?

If anything the government should be pumping money into the local arts and hoping Korean pop culture can catch up to the rest of the free world.

I hear what your saying. But I think Korean democracy has grown enough that people aint ginna be locked up for singing an ant-govt. song, no matter who is elected.

Yeah, I guess his blacklist plan is about as likely as his canal plan.

But ... but ... but that could lead to South Korea having a woman president before the United States. The student would surpass the teacher ...

I recall that incident. Those two band members got naked on live national public television. Name one country in the world where that would be shrugged off. Just because you can't take a whizz in the President's soup bowl doesn't mean you live in a police state. Anarchist rock stars don't exactly shoulder the responsibility of taking care of an entire country, so if they don't like some political candidate, that doesn't mean we shouldn't vote for them.
