As China's Mega-Dam Rises, So Do Strains & Fear
By Chris Buckley
BADONG, China (Reuters) - The slopes of Chenjialing Village have shuddered and groaned lately, cracking and warping homes and fields, and making residents fear the banks of China's swelling Three Gorges Dam may hold deadly perils

Hmmm...create the world's largest damn and subsequently a huge body of water that isn't supposed to be there (the damn lake) and you have geological problems? It's not all that surprising. |

The greedy little piggie developers were warned of what stood to be disasterous consequences for years
Mass ecological destruction, mind-boggling human relocations, extinction of wildlife, historic sites etc,
when has that ever mattered? |

When push comes to shove, there are hundreds of US Tomahawk Cruise missles that are already mapped to the base of that dam. Its in danger alright.

If "push came to shove" Tomahawks would probably be the least of the missiles to worry about..
I agree though its an environmental catastrophe.

Well, they've already killed off the Beiji dolphin which was remarkably underreported considering its the first large mammalian extinction in god knows how long. I don't think the Chinese care what they kill off. |

Deep Concern Over Three Gorges Dam
By Michael Bristow
BBC News, Beijing
Friday, 30 November 2007
The dam is meant to alleviate flooding and generate electricity
There are fears that China's Three Gorges Dam is causing serious environmental problems, despite official claims to the contrary. Local farmers, environmental campaigners and even officials themselves have voiced concern about environmental damage.
That damage includes landslides that have triggered 50 metre-high waves on the reservoir behind the dam, according to one local official.
But despite these widespread accusations, the Chinese central government insists there are no geological "abnormalities".
Critics of the Three Gorges Dam - the world's largest hydro-electricity project - have long argued that the scheme would lead to environmental problems in the area around the reservoir.

But then you'd just be exchanging one form of ecocide for another. |

When I first heard about the 3 Gorges Dam plan when I was in college my first thought was, "Well, we're safe from war with China." It's just SO vulnerable, and everyone lives below it. From a strategic point of view, what were they thinking? |
