|
|
Hi,
I've just received an email from a recruiter stating that the laws are changing in December, and as i want to start work in January I will need a health check and a criminal record check. They also told me that there will be a consulate interview so the visa process will take longer. Is this true?
Only reason I am doubting this is because I wouldn't have thought they could pass a law so quickly, and that my recruiter is stating there are loads of jobs going end of November, which is when I originally said i wanted to work.
Thanks |

there have been about 20-30 different threads here over the past 5 weeks or so. Currently it's speculation and unconfirmed, but seems likely that something along those lines are going to happen. |

Actually, it's not a law, it's a regulation. That sounds like semantics, but it's really not. A regulation can be put in place by a branch of government (such as Justice, Immigration, IRS etc.) just on their say-so. It has the force of law.
But when the flow of native teachers suddenly slows to a trickle, the good thing about this is that they will be able to drop the requirement for the consular interview in nanoseconds. |

Thanks for the replies.
If it is just speculation, then why is my recruiter asking me to get a criminal record check and a health check? |

Because there was an article in the Korea Herald last week which said that this would become law as of Dec 1st. 2007. But since then, someone has hinted that this is just pre-election BS (as there is an election just 5 weeks away).
The short answer is ....it's just speculation.
The long answer is ....it may be just speculation, but we're not sure.
You're recruiter is just trying to cover all the bases just to be safe. |

In anticipation that the speculated changes are put into practice. If they're not, no harm done, really. If they are put into practice, they don't want to be cuaght with their pants down and have to scramble at the last minute. Maybe your recruiter was a boyscout? |

That depends. A public school gig requires both a medical check and a criminal record check.
Most hakwons on the other hand can't be arsed. But if these requirements are put into force (hopefully the embassy one will be scratched) it will only be a good thing overall...IF the Immi goons can get their act together so that we don't need to do this EVERY time. |

It makes the recruiter's job easier-and I had to get both for EPIK |

Does the school then pay for the round- the- world flight to attend the 20 minute interview at a Korean consulate? if you R recruited in Korea already?
Another thing...they seem to be accepting Korean police checks, am I right? |

Yes, THOSE are required (I gave my criminal record check as a condition of employment at my uni, too), but the speculation includes: notarizing and apostilling the documents, getting and renewing visas in your home country only, medical checks in BOTH your home country and korea, pre-visa interviews at the nearest embassy in yout home countr. THOSE are all speculation, and IMO are nothing more than electorial posturing. |
