I'm thinking of returning to Korea soon, and beginning the arduous (sp?) task of interviewing. Long story short, my old director hates me. I completed my contract but we had "issues" re: breaks and sick time, and she ended up stiffing me considerably on my flight home. I'm worried she will smack talk me to anyone looking for a reference. I was overall well liked at the school and I still get emails from my kids. My question is: should I be up front with my new recrutiters and tell them my director might not have good things to say? I've had friends whose former bosses screwed them over for the simple fact they were coming back to Korea and not returning to their old hagwon. Any advice would be wicked. Cheers.

I am not aware of anyone wanting references. Don't worry.

Simply don't use her as a reference. Problem solved.

Perhaps she should tell the recruiter and/or school about Kim because she'd then be able to make an extra million or so per year due to her previous stint in the R.O.K.

What do you think, Y.F.?

References from locals appear to open lots of doors. But, in my opinion, do not sweat it more than a wee bit.

Hell, I've even had to clear my name before the courts in Korea for a reason that most posters on this board assert makes me a mental case/tin-hat/blar, blar, blar.

Whatever those dinkies type here on Dave's Reactionary Cafe Korea Forums about moi means S.W.A. 'cause Roch still gets job offers.

Yes, do not sweat it!

R

But there is still the issue of making sure your resume matches what immi has on file regarding your work places in Korea. If you leave a work place off a resume, it leaves a time gap and it would look suspicious if you were in Korea during this time.

Even if you don't list a director as a reference, your next prospective employer will probably call the old school anyway.

Word! (Sorry, Jizzo, et-al.)

The schools that check references are checking to see if you are a push over or not. If you don't have a good reference from the last job, that only means you'll have to apply at 3 places instead of 2 before you get a new job. Yes, if you quit a job, that school will jerk you over even if everyone said you did a good job there.

K/recruiters and most K/hakwan owners/directors don't pay much attention to your resume (much less 'gaps').

Nor does K/immi. Even if they did, do really think the two groups actually 'communicate' with one another?

If they did...would you have to start from scratch each and every time?

Most K/owners/directors are too self-absorbed (read smug/inflated egos) to contact a 'stranger' at another hakwan.

Just make sure you have a great photo and apply outside of 'Mrs. Kim's' hakwan association area.

Anyone willing to bear the expense in time and $ to jump thru all the new hoops is going to get a job at the average K/hakwan.

Immigration does not check their records against your resume. They do not have a copy of your resume anyway, just a contract. They don't care.

The only person who has a copy of the resume is the prospective employer, and he doesn'y know anything about your previous job experience except for what you tell him. If you are REALLY worried about what a previous boss will say, just leave them off the resume.

I've done it, and no one has ever mentioned it least of all Immigration or the people who continue to offer me jobs.

There are other options, if you have a co-worker there who you got along with is to put their number somewhere on your resume and let the new employer or recruiter call them as a reference.

Otherwise, don't sweat it. If asked directly by the school about the job tell them you completed the contract.

Send this link in an email to your previous employer:

and don't use her as a reference. Wink

That may be true in some cases, but in my case my bosses have all spoken to my old employers at one time or another to clarify that I worked there etc.

I have also had immigration ring my old boss to ask why I was moving to a different town and why I had previously worked in another area of the country prior to working for him.

I have also had an Immigration officer completely confused that I was applying for a new visa in a new town and couldn't understand why I would move to diffferent cities within Korea.

They do communicate at times, its we don't always hear about it. They also have all our records on computer, and can prove in 5 minutes that we are legit if they wished too. I don't know why but they sem to want us to reapply every time for the documents that they already hold in file and on computer.

Maybe they don't trust thier own officials to be honest and feel that we could have bribed them to accept the old documents and as such they want the physical proof that they were legitimate for the new job.
