I have been trying to fix this computer for a few days and it has one problem which is frustrating. Running XP Pro SP 2 .
I installed Eng windows and all updates it was fine.
The next day when my friend plugged in a usb device (HD or Ipod) it froze and needed reboot.
Now everytime I plugged in a USB device, it froze.
It seems it's freezing at the time of about 2-5 sec after a USB device is plugged in. Around the time XP's starting detection.
So I
1. Checked cmos settings. It's al set right.
2. Deleted all USB drivers/devices (IDE to USB) in device manager and rebooted. Windows reinstalled em. Same prob.
3. Tried updating USB drivers. No luck.
INTERESTINGLY I then unplugged the comp. from the wall for 30 min. Then plugged in and restarted . It WORKED and didn't freeze. USBs plugged in and recognized by XP. So left all two USB devices in over night. By morning, same issue.
I'm thinking it's a power issue: Power supply? A new DVD- r drive has been put in very recently. Maybe it's causing a prob? (There was an old dvd reader in there before).
or
A windows update has caused the prob.
I may try a re-install of windows with only SP 2 to see if that fixes it
Any ideas techies?
Sorry I dont have the specs of the machine here.

BTW : I have Googled many times, and it seems I'm not alone with this issue. That's why I'm thinking MS update has done somthing too. |
