I am in Korea now and am interviewing for a variety of uni. positions and was wondering if someone could give me the 411 on accepting more than one position (my VISA expires in March and these positions begin in March). That is, is it ok to line up more than one offer and turn them down as better ones come? Actually, what I really want to know is how they ensure you will work for 'them' when the start date is over 3 months away? |

you can keep stringing them along for a bit, but as soon as you verbally "accept" the position, the admin will begin processing your documents for immigration and the visa.
given the impending Dec. 1 E-2 changes, i'm guessing most unis in the know will be looking to do that even faster than before.
to be sure you need to discuss the actual contract starting dates.
unless the uni goes by an actual contract date of 3/1/2008, most have a contract starting date of january 1 and march is the teaching start.
in university hiring, a january 1 contract date is not that far off. a march 1 date still has some time.
how they ensure you will work for them when the starting date is over three months? by signing the contract.
once you sign it (and the visa paperwork begins in that university's name) immigration has a record of it.
imo, verbally accepting more than one and putting their admin into paperwork mode is a no-no.
karma's a real b-tch and WILL come back to bite you. |

I'd becareful of doing that, especially on an E-2 visa. There is always the chance it will come back to bit you in the butt and you end up not getting any of the jobs you accepted. |

Schools can do that. Accept people and then let them go at last minute. If teachers do it, it's a no-no.
Unfortunately, this is a chicken/egg argument, and if we (teachers) do this often, the problem will never sort itself out. |
