That wasn't it. It was that he thought there weren't any white South Africans. Which is pretty hilarious. But not in a funny, ha-ha way.

Oh, the South Africans. Well guess what, I'm not South African, and by default, wasn't brought up to care about its historical events. In fact, I probably couldn't have an intelligent conversation about most of the topics Superfly listed. That doesn't make me unintelligent, it just means that my mental priorities lie elsewhere.

Hey, did you know that Sam Houston helped to liberate Texas from the Mexicans? You didn't?! My, my--did you even go to university?

Incognito probably knows more about Canadian political affairs than a lot of you who are calling him out, but that wouldn't give him to right to call you guys morons (although, in light of your behavior on this thread, I wouldn't hold it against him).

Thank you.

I've never met/seen any. Apparently the white population of South Africa is only 4.4 million. Thats less than the Canadian Maritimes, and 95% of Americans don't know what/where the Maritimes are, nor do they know any history about it (its rare to meet an American that knows any Canadian history, or can name all the provinces/territories).

I think this is more a case of a bandwagoning than a case of just desserts.

I'm from Nova Scotia and we did learn about Apartheid in High School, while I do not the history of every country in the world, we were thought major historical events in the recent years. Nelson Mandela is seen as one of the major political figures worldwide and I knew what he did by grade 10.

But no I don't know every single bit of history of that country, but one of my best buddies here tells me a bit of info, both the good and the bad.

Only learned about Australia's "criminal" history in University. Curious about New Sealand is that where Australia sent it's worst criminals, haha.

I think my High School was weird. I never did Shakespeare until university, and I was absolutely shocked that my first year professor assumed we were all familiar with Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, and possibly Hamlet.

Right up until Grade 12, my teacher told us we'd do Shakespeare in university then when we arrived in university... they assumed we were already familiar with it. We also didn't read the following in High School:

1984, Animal Farm, or The Catcher in the Rye. Apparently everyone in every High School has read those books as assignments, I read them all for the first time in university.

That went for history too... Never studied any of the World Wars or the Cold War in High School. I used movies and books for that. I don't recall ever talking about anything post-1901.

Why would they send them all the way back to England? And Sealand's incredibly tiny. Wouldn't fit more than a hundred I'd imagine.

You might not be stupid , but you probably are ignorant .

The problem is you all cared about south africa and demanded the white government handed over power....and now that as a white south african you have 2 times the chance of getting murdered than an american soldier in the Vietnam war , you suddenly stopped caring and forgot about us ....

....thanks .

here's a quick history

Anyway here's another side of the story (a little dramatic and histrionic...but still...many older white people feel this way , right or wrong)

and here's another ...

Don't worry about it. There are many great books. Why should these be singled out as "required" reading, when hundred of others are just as great? I never read any of them in school, and did an English major. I read "Catcher in the Rye" after age 30, never read any Orwell books, and don't care if I ever do. Also read "The Great Gatsby" only a year ago when I had to teach it. A friend used to laugh that I had never read it. He'd say he didn't believe anyone could finish university without reading it. I figure it's bigger in American schools though.

No worries. He reads like a high schooler trying out amphetamines for the first time. Completely woody characters and a story loosely wrapped around a few strands of good ideas.
